This is my first big game animal. I have the spring access at Tejon and have been hunting archery. I have gotten on some good hogs but blew many stocks with the bow. I was just too eager and not being patient. Well, I decided to take a hog with my rifle and get the pressure off.
Here is the story,
Today I was hunting Tejon alone. I spotted a very large lone boar far off and went after it. Driving to this ridge I was going to lose sight of the boar for about 10 minutes. I choose a good spot to park and headed up a slight uphill to glass and see if I can pick up on that boar again. When I got up to this flat open plane area I spotted a nice lone dry sow and knew that this was the hog to harvest. I came up this hill and was around 100 yards from the hog. I took off my pack and waited for the shot. I was kneeling and was given the shot. With my 30-06, I sent the package. The package you ask? 165gr. barnes tsx. Good shot and the hog turned to expose the exit wound to me and I was quite pleased to see gushing blood. Just then the sow charged at me and I moved out of the way. It actually ran right over my pack dripping blood all over it. I had it broadside at about 50 yards now and it seemed to be going down. I quickly shouldered my rifle and sent another package. The hog dropped and expired within 30 seconds. Only seeing an animal gutted and skinned 2 times it was my turn to get the job done. I gutted it up there, then pulled it down the hill about 200 yards to my truck. I skinned it out and packed it in the cooler whole and was off to the butcher.
It was a great experience and I am glad I was alone to get it done myself. I learned a lot. Now that the pressure is off it is time to harvest with my bow.
Here are a couple pictures.
