I've been reading the posts on hog hunting on this site.......man you guys really work hard for your hunts.Ya'll really have to go the extra mile to bag your quarry....I can really respect that. I like the way you steer each other away from the canned hunts......and support each other on the difficult stuff.Anyway my hat is off to you guys. When I see one of your pics I'll have a better understanding of all the work involved.good luck on ya'll upcoming hunt.

I was going to talk about hog hunting in Texas but .....It's so different from place to place. We don't have many regulations for taking hogs. Some people use silenced weapons.....and of course everybodys just got to stab a hog.

I hunt and trap in the hill country of texas.....it's rough country.....so the hunting is hard.I kill some hogs while scouting, but I'd rather sit in a deer stand. I respect those of you that want to really go primative......but I am trying to cut the number of hogs down to have more deer (whitetail and exotic). I hunt over a feeder, pig pipes, and a rubbing post. I like to hunt in the evenings and a couple of hours after dark. When I hunt ....I am really just reading a book a enjoying being outside. The traps and snares are for numbers.I hunt several times a week and have traps and snares going all the time.

My hogs range from real russian looking ,to red ,or yellow and black spotted.

Most of my hogs are under 120lbs.My biggest was a little over 300lbs.

There are no farms near-by so the hogs don't get to be really huge.

I do get alot of hogs in a year and have permission to hunt some really large ranches........but I stay on our little ranch. As things are now I catch far more hogs than I know what to do with. I give meat away to treatment centers and friends.

I don't consider myself a great hog hunter.....but I know how to find them and kill them.

Heathen,
appreciate the recognition and believe me, the things you share with us are definately valuable.

By coming here (JHO) you've joined a great community of guys and gals who share a common bond in the greatest sport I know and you've enlarged the community by linking us to Texas.

One of my best friends is planning to move to Texas and we talk about what hunting would be like there, so you're helping there also.

What are Texas' regulations regarding out of state hunters? and... any chance we can look you up while we're there?

Love to buy you a beer and exchange stories etc...

As to out of state hunters you got to get a small game permit......not sure how much those are but I am sure they don't come cheap. Lot of people fighting the need for anyone to need a permit to hunt hogs.1) they don't belong to the state(native game does)2) We need all the help we can get to control these things 3) We could use the money that out-of-state people spend.

We got some public land that can be hunted on. If you can convice a farmer that your a good honest person you can find some great cheap or free hunting(few people want hogs). Corn and peanuts are great.Deer and hog leases can be found they range from "HOW MUCH DID YOU SAY ?" ......."to that seems reasonable".There's a guide under every bush.....some are all right.....it's the way to go if you want to stab one. I think you'll find that many Texas hog hunters enjoy having other people to share the hunt with. You sometimes see people posting on www.texasboars.com looking for someone to share a hunt.

I think Texas has a short term non-resident license that only costs about $35, and it lets you hunt hogs and exotics.

Heathen,

Thanks for the kind words. We do love our pigs here. This is the time of year when you should start seeing some pics rolling in of California hogs. Spring is when lots of hunters start getting cabin fever here and that's all the big game we can hunt.

I've been researching the purchase of some cheep acreage in Texas Hill country with game running on it. Been looking near Kerrville and Fredricksburg. Got any input?

sdbowyer.....yeah I got a lot of iput on that.Kerrville is about 45 minutes from me.East of me.My mom's been selling land here in the Leakey area for about 18 years. I don't think she has any listing's that far east. Land's a tad cheaper here and the hunting is probly better. I guess you know that the whitetails aren't the best but we got far more types of animals to hunt in this area. For you guys that don't know the exotics are free rangeing.they are considered feral stock and can be hunted any time. You can see almost anything you ever seen in a zoo......just running free. Exotic have been up here since the 20's and have escaped over the years.Let me know what you need I can get land info if you want.....out of the paper or I can find out for you who the good agent's are.....kerriville has over 200 real estate agents.

But if you want to look into Leakey you can call my mother at 830-232-9755 her name is Nancy Sue Copple. Even if she wasn't the person who brought me into the world......I still tell you......that they don't get much better than her....she'll tell it like it is even if she loses a sale.

Let me know if I can help.

Thanks Heathen,

It's very possible I'll talk more to you about that. If I can ever make a decision. What's the general water situation like on the smaller properties (40+ acres)? Natural? Drilling?

Drinking water or stock water? It all varies because of the rock. Some of that water over there has sulfur in it......some tastes like bottled water. We hit our well the first try....we witched it. The guy on the next place drilled 19 times.....several times next to our fence line. You just can't tell........

Water for wildlife is easy.......hire a dozier to make you a couple of dirt stock tanks.
