It was my first elk hunt and I'm not sure if even three of us could have gotten that elk hung up. It was all two of us could do to position it the way we did to cut it up. We asked a guy with two horses if he would pack it out and after telling him where it was he said no because of how rough it was. It was acutally vey clean after we were done. Skinned one side and cut that side up then flipped it over and did the other side. Had game bags to put the meat in. BUGLE magazine had an article about gutless processing and although I haven't got the full info yet it made sense to do it the way we did.

nwtfhunter: I'm just curious how/where you hunt elk that they all make it back to camp whole with the skin on!. I'm not trying to be an azz, just curious. Most of the elk I hear about or see are taken out of the woods in pieces. I admit it is great to get an elk whole back to camp, I managed it on my first one ( a cow) 3 years ago but it doesn't seem to be the standard way from my (limited) experience.

Kentuck, I guess if thats all you got to work with ya gotta work it.

BDB, all our elk have gone back to camp whole. Drag to closest road lift or winch into truck and back to camp. Then block and tackle up game pole. Before I started hunting with the guys I hunt with there had been 2 elk 1/4 because of how far in they were. and they have been hunting there for 30 years.

Great story. Snow, steep country, long hikes and success on a nice bull. Congrats on a perfect first elk hunt.
