Just purchased this new boar cannon on Gunbroker, It's a Gibbs (Navy Arms) Summit rifle which is a Enfield action rebarreled with a 45-70 barrel in great shape at a great price for those piggys that are too big for my 44 mag rifle. :lol:

That looks like a wild bull rifle to me!! You tote that through the woods and it will be like going back to into the Dark Continent in the early 1900's. What a nostalgic rifle, redone to handle the monstrous 45/70!
Nic Barca wasn't too impressed with the penetration of my 45/70 load, which did the job, but fell apart inside the bull and penetrated about 3/4 of the way through. I've been doing some research today and Barnes makes a 300 grain SuperX solid copper bullet specifically for the 45/70. It's the new version of the Barnes X bullet, which I've used before and which holds together and REALLY penetrates. I'm thinking about loading up a batch of those and trying them on hogs and another bull. I'd truthfully rather see the bullet I use open up wide and pass all the way through.
Anyway, congrats on the new rifle and lets try it out at Laupahoehoe when you're up to the hike. I found a new area of Laupahoehoe to hunt [took 2 hogs there] and it's only about a 15 minute hike from the road. Nobody goes there, I found a huge waterhole there [about 30 by 60 feet], and the place is loaded with hog sign. Shouldn't be much of a hike at all.
Let us know how that monster shoots.

Thank you Bruce, I thought you'd like it. The gun won't be here until early next week but I've already ordered the dies, and some 405 grain hardcast bullets. I already have imr-4064 so will start with that at around 1700 fps. I'll submit a range report ASAP.

A bra thats alot of gun. If you dont take anything big with that down Its not the guns fault. But it looks nice. For me My 1966 remington 788 in 308 cal. puts down some the big pigs. I'm getting ready to take the scope off and put the irons sights back on. It will be my bush gun for close quarters stuff in the thickest of thick. I took the really nice wood stock off and put a syn stock to save weight and that way I dont have to worry about beating it up.

Doc, Uncle Ji, Nic and Evan,
You guys are sitting and living in paradise. Imagine 15 glorious minutes from the road and there is a waterhole full of hog sign!!! WOWEEE!!! I guess the real challenge is finding enough neighbors to share the meat, otherwise Doc will have to buy a walk-in freezer for the luscious-deliscious harvested meat. Oh my!!!! hundred pounder porkers within 15 minutes of the road and thousand pounder plus vancouver bulls being smacked by a Marlin 45-70 hot load and now Uncle Ji with his Gibbs 45-70 boomer smacking the wild Hawaiian hoof with his 405 grain Hard Cast hot loads. Oh My, Oh My!!!! I am drooling at the keyboard this very minute. You guys have to keep sharing with us your hottie Hawaiian hunting successes. We love every word of your tales. Something came up to mind right now and that is in this JHO forum somewhere, I remember a guy that trained and uses goats as pack animals. Doc, I guess, it would not be to hard to train a couple or more of these goats to carry a side saddle load of water and provisions and harvested meat when hunting the Vancouver bulls deep in the lush Hawaiian forest. Abundant self-sufficient feed for these adaptable goats are also everywhere. It would be a picture of a thousand words to see Doc, Uncle Ji, Nic and Evan trekking out of the deep forest with a train of pack goats loaded with Vancouver steaks and ribs on the way back to the truck. I get goose bumps just thinking about such a scenario. Keep busting those Hawaiian Hoofs with your hottie boomer loads and we will all be so ever grateful for those adrenaline pumping hunting stories. Awesome!!! Awesome!!! This is how I hauled out my last 300+ pound boar...
...though I must admit the haul was about 1/4 mile to camp (dats me with da big smile) .
My buddy in Idaho uses a mule to haul his Elk but a compact fuzzy little burro might be doable. Some guys use Llamas but not sure how they'd do in the rain forest. My wife thinks i'm an ass at times so I might as well haul meat like one.

Very nice rifle! New toys/tools are always a good thing. I'm running 55 gr of imr-3031 behind a 300 grain nosler partition in my 1895gs. I like that pretty well. I have not used it to get dinner yet, but it is accurate. The load comes from KenWater's Pet Loads book.

I don't know how the metal holds up after that much time but I'd sure like to buy it.

Barnes should be running their barnes originals 45/70 300 grain semi spitzers in march.
I'm going to pick up a few boxes and some sabots for my .50 cal muzzle loader.
