My boy turned 8 years old Sunday. We had his party on Saturday. My son wanted to go hunting for his brithday. With his party all done, my wife said you should take him hunting on the morning of his birthday. We had other things to do that day, so the plan was a quick morning hunt. I would be home by 11:00am.

Me, my father in law, nephew, and son would be going. As usual we left the house at 4:30. This allowed us to be at the ranch ready to hunt at 6:22. We hung out for a few minutes, getting fire arms ready, and tracking collars on the dogs. We were ready to go at first light. I drove towards the area we were going to hunt. We proceeded through a gate, and then another 50 yards. My father in law suggested I put a dog out. I usually wait till we are farther up the mountain, but went with his idea. I began to drive again. I did not make it another 50 yards, we spotted a hog running on the ridge above us. We drove another 300 yards, and put a second dog out. I walked over to where the hog ran by. The dogs picked up the sent and headed out. Ten minutes went by, and nothing. Fearing they had gone over the top of the mountain, we headed up. After getting on the ridge, we could hear them bayed 3 canyons away.

We turned out 3 more dogs, and they were off. I estimated they were about 800 yards away. The 4 of us started out on foot. My father in law suggested I go ahead, and he would keep moving with my son. I ran to the hog with my nephew. I took a few minutes of video. Just then the hog broke. He spun and took a charge at a dog. He spun again and the next thing I know the hog is 3 feet in front of me. My nephew, who is right next to me shoots. He said he hit it in the face but it ran off. I spotted the hog across the canyon, with dogs on his tail.

I met up with my son again. So my nephew and father in law headed out after the hog. My son and I prceeded that way as well. The next thing I know the fight is 20 yards below us. Then it breaks again. We see the hog across the canyon. He is about 200 yards away. We can now see the dogs and the hog fighting out in the open. So we decide to stay there. We had a good view of everything. About that time the dogs started catching the hog. I yelled for the others to get there and finish it. No sooner did my father in law get 10 feet away, then dogs flew off and the hog charged him. This hog had more fight that we have seen in a while. But when he got a couple feet away, a shot rang out, and the boar fell to the ground.

We then made our way over there so my son could claim his hog. Even though he could not pull the trigger, he had earned the pig. He ran, went up hill, down hill, slid on his but, and crawled through brush. As was involved in the hunt from start to finish. Although not a trophy tusker, this 160 lb boar with 1 1/2" teeth was mean. He had more fight in himthan we have seen in a while.

I can not think of a better way to have spent his Birthday morning. We were loaded up and headed home by 8:30am. Could not have worked out better. My nephew had hit the hog just not a kill shot.

Nice looking boar hog Bigworm. That color is my favorite. I find they tend to be scrappy sob's too. Not sure if it is just coincidence or not but they always seem to a little more pissed off than the others.

Good job !

Love to hear stories and see pictures of people hunting with their kids. Great experience and long lasting memories. Pass on the hunting heritage !!

Cool looking hog also.

That's sweet!
I do have a question though. Don't you have to be 12 to have a hunting license and hunt in CA? Not trying to stir things up but I'd like to know. I have a 9 tear old son who I'd love to get a hog but I figured we'd have to wait three years.

No you do not need to be twelve to get a hunting license in CA. you son can take the test now, you do need to be twelve to get some tags, deer for sure not sure about hogs.
