looks like we are going to attempt an OTC elk hunting event this year.

we got the big goose-egg from NM, so we are scrambling for options. my brother is gonna meet with some NAMPA policemen, and get some info.. but any first hand experiences here?

I grew up in Idaho. I return every year for the OTC elk hunts - archery. I haven't taken an elk with my bow, yet. However, I do enjoy returning home for the hunt. Idaho has many opportunities for archery OTC elk tags. Find an area that you can get to and then keep going every year - Idaho is a big state and will take some hard scouting/hunting. Best of luck.

Stay away from area 39. It's way over hunted. Go on the Idaho website and look at the harvest reports. You might notice that the harvest is declining fast becuase of the wolves. There are elk to be had but you will need to work hard for them.If you do not know the area then I would go to Colorado. They have more Elk and no Wolves.

Ditto on 39. I've hunted it three times. Took my first elk in 39 but there is one thing to keep in mind. It's a short drive from Boise, the largest population area in Idaho. The last year we hunted there you practically had to bring your own rock to sit on. Numerous "fights' over elk, multiple people shooting at the same elk, etc. etc. The last year there was not a pleasant experience.

Sounds allot like the Saddle Mt unit in Oregon. Spent many hours blocking logging roads at midnight only to end up going fist to cuffs, fighting over who's bullet connected, etc. Although we thought it was fun back then, I'm glad we're all grown up now.
