A relative of mine has recently purchased 3000 acres of rolling to moderate hills in south-western Nebraska. The property was previously run as a game ranch for elk and several species of exotics. Currently there are an estimated 400 to 600 elk on the property and they have not been actively hunted for the last three to four years. As a result, the numbers of cows to bulls is not good, and my cousin is looking to thin out the cow herd before breeding season. The ranch is totally private and no license or tags are required. It is estimated that approximately 100 to 200 cows need to be removed. Based on your experience ( I have none for elk), what do you think would be a fair trespass fee? The going rate at the ranch 4 years ago was $1000 per cow and $5000 per bull. However, they recognize the need to quickly cull some of the older cows and thus provide a reduced price. But they also did pay for the herd as a function of purchasing the ranch and all of it's amenities, so they are not in the game of giving all the animals away for free.
At this point, I simply suggested providing 2 nights lodging (nice condo style rooms above a 20,000 sq. ft. barn.) and a cow hunt for $500 - 1/2 price to the first 100 customers. I am interested in the thoughts of elk hunters. Once a program has been established for the property, I will keep everyone informed and try and get some pictures of the herd.

P.S. - I am planning on going in August or September for a little archery hunting with my dad and son.
