Need input before a trip.

There's a ranch in or near Riverside Ca. called "Big Canyon Ranch".
They're online and I've spoken with the owner. They Charge $25.00 a hunt and an add'l $290.00 per animal taken.

Their site shows Hog Photos as well as several other types of game.
The pricing includes lodging and they offer other services.

My understanding is that the ranch was (at some point) stocked with Hogs and they've stuck around and bread.

The beauty in this "Offer" is that if you don't take an animal, the hunt was only $25.00

Anyone been there? Had any luck? Experiences?

Would greatly appreciate any input you may have. I really don't want to embarass myself by taking the guys out there to watch the brush grow.

I think somebody has mentioned this place before. Regardless, it sounds like a ranch where they are releasing the pigs for the hunters.

edited: I found the site....looks like you don't need a license, which sounds like they release them for you. Not my cup of tea, but that's just me...

The "at some point released" is likely to be the day before your hunt at that ranch. The pigs are barnyard pigs bought at auction and released on the ranch. Definitely not wild hogs and not a challenging hunt. It is more like a "shoot" than a hunt. The goats can be more challenging, but only because they tend to hang out on the steeper ridges and last a little longer, so they get wise to what is going on.

If you like going to a FARM and shooting yourself a pig then this the place for you (you probably don't, like most of us). Unfortunatly I have been to Big Canyon Ranch. I buddy of my went once and I went against his advice and went anyways. Well here is the story...

I got there at around 6am and right away noticed a pig by a fence, man was I excited. I decided to try and get close to the pig as much as possible, so I went into stalk mode. As I was going threw the brush towards the pig, I stumbled (literally) over two pigs that were sleeping in a ditch. I thought to myself why in the hell are these guys not running away. Well, I decided to grab one by the leg, nothing didn't even wake up, I poked it with a stick, nothing, then I thought it was dead. Well, finally I poked it in the you know what and the pig got up, only to walk 20 yards and go to sleep again. By this point I was laughing my a$$ off thinking how in the hell do these people call this hunting. Right away I went back up to the guy and told him what I tought of his place and he offered me to shot a pig for $100. I said no and starting packing up my stuff to leave. There was another group of 4 guys there and they all shot pigs and they starting telling me stories of their "hunt", and how they put the stalk on the pigs, that was a good laught. Well I guess what ever floats their boat.

A friend of mine was there a couple of weeks ago. (The only reason he went was to take two handicapped hunters, he didn't hunt) Apparently the guy is buying live trapped feral hogs out of Arkansas and Georgia now. He said they were definitely not barnyard pigs, but they were a long way from what we expect wild pigs to be. I won't go into the hunt details, but they pulled in at 6:30am and had 2 hogs dead, gutted, and back to the ranch HQ by 7:30 am.

Do a forum search and you will get quite a bit of info and opinions on the ranch.

oh by the way I have seen and raised farm pigs that were meaner then the ones I saw there. The pigs there get eaten by the coyotes, and I am not talking about pigglets, pigs that weigh 100+ pounds, now how wild is that?

Been there, not my cup of tea...My advice, add a $100 to the price of Big Horn and head up to King City and hunt "Real Wild Hogs"...

Thanks guys! Once again the JHO team to the rescue. I certainly could not face my friends after an experience like that.

I'm a Hunter and if all I wanted to do was kill pigs I could go to work for Farmer John down in L.A.

Looks like Private land and the Monterey County area are still your best bet. I can't pretend to be as successful as most of you but I do enjoy the "Hunt".

I made the mistake once. Had to kick this guy off the trail where he was sleeping. He reluctently gave up his bed and went over for a drink. Then posed for a few pictures.
