I have a 35mm canon rebel G camera with an 80mm lens and a 210mm lens. I would like to take pictures of deer and elk at distances of 500 to 800 yards. With the 210 I have to be under 200 yards to get good pics. Does anyone know what size lens i would need to use. Would a 400mm lens do the job. Bigger?

Off the cuff, I'd say that 500-800 yds is a lonnnnnggg way; my incliniation is that you need more than a 400. I had a 500 for my 35 mm camera, and I don't think I ever took any pics that far out; the animal would just be too small in the photo. I like the animal/s to be a significant portion of my picture unless their surroundings are as important to the photo as they are.
You know, an interesting assignment would be to take some photos of known-size objects at various (known) distances.

You can buy a digital camera with an optical zoom of 10X and greater (you need greater) for a lot less $ than a good telephoto lens for your film camera. They are very heavy also, and not much fun to lug around in the field. Look around this forum under digital camera for information. Jesse posted good comments on his 10X Olympus digital cam. WB

RHNM, First off, look around on ebay(I just bought a canon ae1 whith a 50 mm and a 80-200mm lens), what you can do is, first search for you camera in general, then find any lens in the listing, go to it, then you will see a little highlighted path(something to the effect lens to fit canon rebel) click on it. then search in the results for what you are looking for(might want to try a 2-4x coupeler). I have a sony mavica(way cool, floppy disk media) It has a 10x zoom which is great for family outing and such but I don't think it would cut it in the field for shots like you are talking about. IMHO. Hope this helps out

Thanks for the responses. Will the digital cameras with 10x zoom take pics out to 500-800 yards? I was thinking of buying a 400mm to 1200mm lens. Does anyone know if that will do the job? What I am trying to do is get pictures without disturbing the deer and elk. I would like to be able to see the antlers at these distances.

A 10X compares to a 500mm lens in 35mm format. A high quality lens this long or longer will cost you very serious money. Take a look at the Sony digital cams. I believe some have up to 20X zoom with very high resolution. WB

Hello rhnm,

My Olympus 2100 with 10x optical zoom and a 1.7x tele lens gives me about 675mm worth of zoom. This is only good to about 150 yards to fill about half the frame with the animal. If you figure double that zoom amount, it still only gets you out to 300 yards or so.

If you're looking to film animals that far I would look into digiscoping. That is the only way I see photographers getting that long of a shot and still having good images. Try seaching here and on Google for "digiscoping".

Let us know how it works out.

What about the spotting scopes that accept camera mounts. I think my Nikon 15x45x60mm takes one, seems to me the Kowas do as well. Never tried it, but its a lot of zoom. Probably need a lot of light though.

CHECK OUT CABELAS FOR THE SPOTTING SCOPE'S AND ADAPTERS FOR 35 MM CAMERAS. YOU CAN GET A SETUP WITH 20X OR 25X. I THINK YOU CAN GET THE SCOPE,PHOTO TUBE AND ADAPTER FOR AROUND 400 BUCKS. JUST DO A SEARCH FOR CAMERAS ON CABELAS.COM AND IT WILL TAKE YOU RIGHT TO IT.
