Read this months edition of CA Hog Hunter, and upon reading the front page by Jim Matthews started to wonder if there is any huntable public land near Needles CA - Anyone know?

Not that I've heard, But I could be wrong. I've heard some where that they were supposed to, or trying to open some area up to hunting. Thats about all I've heard though. Maybe someone else can give a little more help.

Borebutter, there is roughly a bazzilion acres of public hunting land not far from Needles. Just not sure how close you mean or what you are wanting to hunt. There are quail & yotes though.

Good Luck

Looking to hunt wild pigs on public land... Apparently, at least from what I gleaned from the article by Jim Matthews, the Havasu Wildlife Preserve located near Needles, CA has a bit of a pig population problem... I'm interested in finding out if there is public land that backs up against that preserve that is huntable, or if perhaps the preserve itself is huntable. Will look into it more and post here if I find out anything interesting.

I too read the Matthews article. Since I grew up in Lake Havasu and still have family there, I was intrigued. I visited the Refuge web site and found their document that explains the approach they are taking.

I thought I might contact the Refuge manage and seek permission to hunt. After reading the document I decided not too. Access to the area appears to be very difficult. It includes marsh and other water obstacles. If you have a boat, you may have an easier time.

On the other hand, I have heard of other areas in the area of the Colorado river that may have pigs (might be on the Arizona side though).

Since I don't have a boat, I'm going to let this one go.

Good luck.

Contacted a wildlife biologist at Havasu Wildlife Preserve, and sure enough they have a population of pigs that they want to eradicate. The preserve is not huntable for feral pigs at this time, but they may organize some hunts in the near future. I will pursue this further during the week when the Park manager is available to speak with. Also looking into whether or not there is any BLM property adjacent to the Preserve that may have pigs on it.
