Last year I drew out for a Special Hunt with DFG. The hunt my son and I got picked to participate in was a "JR Required family Hunt". When we arrived we were told that only my son was able to hunt beacause it was a "junior required" All of the parents their were told the same thing and to say the least know one was happy. We all thought Junior required meant a junior hunter had to be with you. Although our kids did get to hunt we were hoping to hunt along side of them. I have since made many calls to DFG, Checked there website and E mailed them and know one can give me any answers. So heres my question (s) What does it mean when they have a "family hunt"? "JR only"? (Im assuming that is kids only but I may be wrong). "JR only apprentice"? "JR required" and "JR required family hunt". Thanks in advance for any help in clarifying this for me.

No on the jr only with the family hunt I believe it is all the members submitted on the application...As far as JUNIOR hunts go it is for juniors only no different then the junior hunt for waterfowl....

Send a PM to Dackfan he knows lots about these kinds of questions for sure he is in the know..

This is my opinion:

If it was a JR required family Hunt, it should mean, you must have at least 1 junior in the party...but the family can all hunt.

It sounds like you were on a junior only hunt. On those hunts, there is usually a rule of 1 adult per 2 junior hunters...and the adults are there to supervise only.

They have all kinds of hunts like you mention:

Junior Required Family hunts
Junior Only
Family Hunts
Women’s' Hunt
etc...

The mere definition of a junior being required, but calling it a family hunt should allow all in the family to hunt. If you were on a 'family' hunt, I can understand you being upset. I wonder if at the last minute, the property owner that provided DFG with the hunt location, decided they only wanted kids to shoot? There are land owners that are very particular on that subject. Anyway, without having the specific details of that hunt, not sure if we will ever know what happened back then.

If you get selected this year for a hunt and have questions on who will be eligible to hunt on UPLAND game special hunts, you can e mail the Upland Game Program at: Karen Fothergill kfotherg@dfg.ca.gov

Maybe you can call her and clarify their definitons being used. If they are anything but what I said above, then we all need to write and complain and ask they Clarify the hunt definitions as part of the descriptions they print for each hunt. I know they do that for waterfowl hunts.

or call (916) 445-0411 and ask to be connected to Karen, or someone involved in the UPLAND GAME Special Hunt program.

Good luck

Thanks so much for the information. It was a jr required hunt, but could have changed and we weren't notified or told. If I get any further information I will be sure to pass it on.
