Greetings and salutations!

New member and hunter. Joined site to find like minded people and tips and tricks from the pros lol. I'm located in the northern central valley, about an hour south of Sacramento. A little bit of background, I'm just getting back into hunting after about 30+ years, even then I only went a handful of times as a young kid. My 16 year old daughter now wants to learn. We have no plans to go actual hunting this season but plan to do scouting for next season. We are planning to go to D3-5. We're starting to get our gear together now for future hunting. We will be mostly be doing backpack hunting and possibly overnighters. I was looking for any advice or pointers to make it a fun venture for her. She already has reasonable expectations that not every trip will result in a deer. Thanks in advance for your time.

Hi,
With limited information i'll suggest a trip to Wrights Lake area, it's up 50. Just past Kybuz go north (left) on Wrights Lake Rd. Once you climb to 6500' and higher you have a lot options. Getting a camping reservation at the lake may be tough but you can always try dispersal camping. Not sure about local accommodations if your not set up for camping.
look for deer and look for deer sign in the form of tracks, droppings, browsed plants and trails. Think about bringing a light tackle fishing setup and try to catch yourselves a native rainbow or two.
If your up for it there is a trail head at the upper end of Wrights Lake that will take you to Island Lake, it is about a 4 mile moderate to gentle uphill climb with a few water crossings. Island Lake and the mountain peaks surrounding it are just breath taking. Have to say i wouldn't hunt that particular area.
If you decide to go, spend a lot of time looking at maps, there are several small steams and small lakes in the area around and below Wights Lake that are fairly easy to get to, some on and some off trail.
As far as making it fun, that's up to you guys. Hope you find it!
