I am new to the hog hunting scene, but have gotten pretty excited about trying it out. I am from back east, grew up huntin' whitetails. Stationed in Monterey now for about another year and would like to give this pig stuff a try! I don't want to be too forward or anything, but if anyone has any tips on how to go about getting started, public land nearby (since Los Padres is still closed, I hear) or needs a partner sometime, I appreciate anything. Good luck to you all.

Welcome!!!
See if you can go to the JHO Tejon hunt on May 22-24 well worth the 450.00 and you should be able to carpool. Lots of good hunters and about a 75% kill rate much better than any public land hunt. I did the public land thing and the pay to hunt scene is the way to go. Or try Bryson Resort for 200 it's a great deal. Hunting Packages for Wild Pig, Turkey and Deer

You'll want to check out Fort Hunter ligget and Vandenburg Air Force Base as well. FHL is open to the public, VAFB is military/retirees/dependents only.

Both have decent/good hog populations.

I mailed my application for FHL today, hope to get word back soon. As soon as the permit is approved, I'm there! Any pointers on where to go on FHL? Anyone else wanna plan a trip down there anytime soon?

Hey Navy: check out Vandenberg. It's got some excellent open country hog hunting on it and we've been seeing 'em almost every night now. You can get information on hunting there by calling the base fish and game office at 805 606 6804 or call me on Tuesdays or Thursdays at the Rod and Gun Club at 805 606 4560. I'll try to give you some help if I can. There are others on this forum that know me and could maybe add to this. Give it a try; it's not that far from Monterey.

To be honest, I didn't realize Vandenberg was only 3 1/2 hours from here. Maybe we can work that out for a weekend sometime soon.

I recommend you hit the military land (free) or hire a guide (not free, about $500, but virtually 100% success). After you get some time and a hog under your belt, then only would I recommend Tejon or another high dollar access hunt. Only if you know what you are doing will you get the 75% success rate at Tejon you read about here. It is very frustrating to pay a high access fee and then see no pigs, because you are inexperienced.

Good Luck!

I RECOMEND VANDENBURG AS WELL. WHEN I WAS IN THE NAVY I HIT THAT BASE UP ALL THE TIME. PIGS ARE EVERYWHERE ALONG WITH DEER AND QUAIL. I ONCE SHOT A 350 LB BOAR ON THE BEACH WHILE HE WAS EATING CRABS. PLUS THEY HAVE A NICE RANGE WHERE UYOU CAN ALWAYS SIGHT IN YOUR RIFLE.

Yeah - Vandyland.

But don't overlook your home area. You'll need to find some private ranchland.. But it's prime pig area up the Carmel valley and Salinas Valley. Start by knocking on doors for permission to shoot ground squirrels.. Develop a relationship, and go from there.

at one time Navy-Hunter i was a hard core whitetail hunter growing up back east too and thought they were the ultimate game animal to hunt with a bow. now after hunting wild boar out west here for the last couple of years its changed my mind completely as far as a worthy game animal to hunt, me personally find wild pigs way more challanging to hunt now, and when i put one down with a bow it will be my ultimate trophy that i ever hunted no matter what size it is, besides when the last time you were charged by a whitetail, good luck on your pursuit of hunting wild pigs!.......................tra

All paperwork is in and the powers that be indicate I will LIKELY be good to go this weekend. That said, anybody else headed that way? If all goes as planned, I'll camp down there and would enjoy putting faces with (screen)names ifanyone is there. Feel free to email me if anyone wants to join me.
