I stopped by the gun store on the way home from work today and it just so happened they received a shipment of the new Benelli R1 semi auto rifles.

I had a bad feeling when I went into the store because it has been a few months since I bought any new hunting stuff and when it comes to guns and the like I am a true addict.

When the store manager put this bad boy in my hands I new it was a must have.

The rifle is chambered in 30-06 and is suppose to have half the recoil of any other 30-06 in the world.
The technology used in manufacturing the R1 is the very same they used in there new shot guns.

While it was rather pricey it's one of those things that will last you a life time. They had both walnut and synthetic and I opted from the synthetic rather than the wood.

I figure some Zeiss glass would be ideal for a rifle like this.
A nice hog at this up coming POR would be the icing on the cake.

Now that's the way it's done. I shoot A benelli SBE 12ga. I can shoot box after box through the thing and never gets my shoulder even kinda sore. Amazing recoil system built right into the stock. If this works out anything like the shotgun then Id think the 06 will be very manageable the 300 mag would be fun to fire from this gun also. Let us know how the riflew performs, trigger feel, LOP, weight everything!!
I'm drooling over that bad boy! have to go see Mr. Baker pretty soon if I'm not careful.

That gun is such a beauty...I have the Black Eagle II and it does wonders. I went pig hunting and even though i didnt get anything, i had the chance to practice shooting slugs and with the comfort tech it felt like if i was just shooting regular ammo. Now that rifle will do much more in the right hands because the recoil is less. And it feels good to shoot without it hurting.

When you look at the gun the missing bolt takes a little getting used to but I'm sure I'll manage

. Before you all get too jelous.... my 40th Bday is coming up in 10 more days so this is kinda a little gift to myself for actually living through all the stupid stuff I did when I was younger.

I will give a full report after the government check to see if I'm a good boy.
Blackeagle, The rifle’s gas cylinder is positioned just in front of the chamber allowing for short operating rods and reduced recoiling mass.

The quality of the gun is impressive, but that bulky looking forearm stock kinda turns me off.

A tad too racy for my old fart tastes my idea of the pinnecle of rifle design being the 1886 Winchester, though i'm sure it's a marvel of modern design and functionality. Looks very Italian sort of like the Lamborghini Diablo of rifles. If it has interchangable barrels even more practicle. Please keep us posted on how she shoots.

ironworker,

Great Rifle !!

I just swung into the Benelli website.... they have a great video .....

here's the website:
left-side menu: click LAUNCH VIDEO
http://www.benelliusa.com/firearms/r1rifle.tpl

the shooter misses the first shot at a pig..... but he's right on top of it with shot # 2 !!

then the shooter misses the first shot on a caribou.... and # 2 does the job.

Cheers and Congrats,

Carl

"I have enough guns. I have enough guns....
Heck I haven't hunted big game w/ a rifle in a few years..."

That's a good looking rifle! Don't mean to hijack, but the Blaser also looks cool.
Enjoy it, good luck, and whack 'em 'till they dun' get up any mo'.

New Pig Hunter,
I watched several times that Benelli R1 semi-auto rifle video and the shooter did not miss the first shots on the piggie and the caribou. He hit both the piggie and the caribou on the first shots. As happens a lot of times, the bullet scores a good hit on the big game animal but these animals are so tenacious that many times instead of dropping like a sack of potatos on the spot, the animal reflexively scoots on a mad dash even though fatally wounded. Sort of like a death run, powered by powerful hard to stop muscles and massive doses of adrenaline. Excellent video. Thanks for posting the link. God Bless.

I also watched that video and have to agree with Larry, the animals were hit with the first shot. Greta video showing off the gun.

I hate to seem like a know-it-all (so please excuse this explanation), but because of my keen "hunter-eye" you guys are wrong about the video. The hunter does make a hit with his first shot on the pig, but it's a different pig. He actually kills TWO pigs with two shots. Look closely and you'll see the first pig drop in the right corner (by a bush) after the first shot.....then you'll see him connect again on a SECOND pig. I'm thinking that that Benelli is showing you the benefits of a semi-automatic (as opposed to a bolt action). Apologies if I'm mistaken. Good luck on your next hunt fellows.

Wild1,
Thanks for the correction. You are absolutely right. I watched the video again and the first pig was hit and dropped right behind that bush. The 2nd pig was hit while running and skidded and dropped right in the open.
What a great shot on the 2nd pig. It was running full bore and it was nailed and dropped with one shot. Those were nice sized piggies too. 'Nuff said.

I'd be interested to know how accurately it shoots with factory ammo... Sub MOA? I might need ANOTHER gun...

Well.... I got the gun last Friday and just got home from the range, it took me a few shells to even hit paper but once I got her dialed in I manged to put seven shots within 1-3/4" of one another.
That's the best shooting I have ever done at the range and I go frequently.

Everything Benelli claimed about the rifle was true... the kick of the 306 is nothing short of amazing. I could shoot box after box without developing a flinch. Another great thing is being able to maintain the target in my glass after firing which is very cool.

Thanks for all the input in the gun and optics forum.. those posts really help me decide on the glass, the Zeiss scope is awesome.
I managed a couple pics.
