I'm new to hunting and need some help. Like most Joe-shmoes, I can't put up the coin for guided hunts so I turn to public land. I am fairly new to the area (Fresno, CA) so I don't know people with private land. I would like to know how to get hooked up with areas to hunt (private land opportunities) and deciphering where to hunt public land. I would also like to know if someone can help me break down the seasons for different game. The CA DFG handbook is not an easy read. It is very repetitive and does not clearly state what I am looking for (or I don't know how to read it correctly). I have interest in hunting deer, turkey, pigs, squirrels and waterfoul. I got a deer tag last year for D7 (which I have found is fairly desolate) and no luck. I got an upland game bird stamp for turkey and tried a bunch of areas (I don't know any good places so I'm winging it. Driving around with a forestry map is all I've got.) to no avail. I would love to find a pig since I think they are the only larger game I can hunt this time of year but don't have the slightest idea where to go. I would like to try the ducks at the Mendota Slew someone told me about but I guess I need the other stamp, some HIP stamp and fill out a survey or something.
Basically, can anyone help me clear this up? When can I hunt what in my area and what do I need from the DFG to hunt it legally? I'll also put this out that if someone needs a hunting buddy and could pass on some knowledge, let me know. I'm ready to go. I'm a good shot with my rifles, bow, and shotgun (yes, I have them, they've just never been pointed at game).
If you have the patience to post a reply, then thank you. It can do nothing but help.
