Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum, and fairly new to hunting in general. I have fished and camped for most of my life but I am now getting into hunting and I am kind of stuck on where to start. I live in Los Angeles county. I have spent a lot of time looking through maps for forests around me, such as the Angeles National Forest and the San Bernadino National Forest. I know that I want to hunt rabbits, dove, and quail, but I am open for anything else thats around me. Can anyone give me some tips or pointers on where to begin? Thank you in advance, it is much appreciated

the national forests around here are tough and steep I would suggest scouting some areas on the foothills or in the desert. There is some good areas in angeles national forest and san bernardino but are either hard to get to or have many people crowding the areas. Also you can try the cleveland national forest which isnt much further away and los padres national forest. oh and welcome to the forum :wavin hello:

Welcome, as for dove, quail and rabbit there season is closed. You can hunt jack rabbits and coyotes if you are looking to go out soon. You can try the high desert for the jack and just about any where for coyotes.

If you are going to hunt the Angeles or Los Padres National Forests near Los Angeles county make sure you know where it's legal to shoot. Here's a link to the last Los Angeles County Firearm Restriction map. http://www.scvquwf.com/LA Co. Closure Maps.htm This map is going through some revamping and will hopefully be updated (digitally) by the end of the year. There is a new Firearm Restriction map out of San Bernardino County and you can get it at Bass Pro. I mention both maps because Angeles & San Bernardino Forest are both good for Rabbits, Dove, Quail and Deer and there is some cross-over in the High Desert.

Remember that General hunting season ended Sunday January 27th and the only game open right now is Pigs, Turkey starts up next month. BTW, make sure to check the "lead bullet" issues in your area. At this time you still may use Lead for Dove, Quail and Cottontails on public lands, but not on some private property.

QUWF do you know where I can get a physical copy of this map. Resolution on my computer doesn't allow me to read the finer details. Thx.

Last printed in 1994, the known copies were available at the LACo Fish & Game Commission office in downtown LA (hall of administration). I was at the last F&G commission meeting in January and we talking to the guys from Dept. of Public Works / Survey/Mapping & Property Management Div. about creating a New/Updated Map. Consulting with LACo F&G commission, CDFW, HEIA-SC, USFS and QUWF we are going to identify and then create a map in a digital format, similar to google maps. Believe it or not, this 1994 map is still being used today as the ONLY reference for Law Enforcement,USFS and LA Co. Supervisors. They are worth there weight in Gold if you can find one, they last sold for $ 4.95.

I'll go down to kinko's to see what they would charge me to run this through their blueprint scanner, but I bet you'll have to .zip the file. I'll see what I can do.

BTW, the next LA Co F&G Commission meeting is April 11, 2013 @ 6:30pm
