New Mexico 16D Elk?

As my friend would say, I must have horse shoe up my ass, because I managed to draw 16D in NM for elk archery. I'm still in shock and probably won't believe it until the tag in my hand, but it certainly gives me motivation to get my ass in shape.

Has anyone hunted 16D in the past? Is it worth getting a guide? They're a lot of $$, but this is really a once in a life time tag and I gotta make it mean something.

Any info is much appreciated.

I put in but have never hunted it. Still kinda in shock that I checked today and drew a White Sands Oryx tag. Congrats on the tag! Good luck and hope to hear a story with some great pics.

@ Bigsur - how the heck have you been lucky enough to hunt it a couple times? Well done. I got the second season...Sept. 11-18th. Seemed to have the best odds when I was researching it.

Hi new member here, I live on the border of 16a and 16d. 16d is is pretty easy to get around, lots of 2 track roads yet still plenty of areas to get away from roads. The hiking is not too rough in most areas. If you study your maps and google earth and hopefully spend a bit of time pre season scouting and are a savvy hunter you will do fine without a guide. If you decide you do want a guide let me know. Good Luck!!!!!

Pray for rain. If the fire gets worse, they may close many of the 16s to hunting this year.
