My brother was told the same thing at the SCI show from a NM elk guide.

NM is “testing the waters” and if everything works out, next year will include Deer and Elk.

NM still has better odds than CA!

I have max points and I cant draw a CA cow tag!!!

Points suck! Only a few states left that don't make you buy into that scam, NM and ID are two. Think I'll just drop sheep with the up front fees and still do ibex, elk and deer. NM is the only place for ibex on your own. Sheep draw odds are not good enough for the fees.

Points suck? Maybe if you are starting at the bottom. Tell that to the guys with 8-12 points in several states across the West. They get to draw world calss hunts across the West most every year. Like anything else in life persistance and investment should be eventually rewarded. Points do that.

This is from the NMGF website. So I called the number below to ask about the full fees up-front next year for all hunts and the lady said it was true.

2010-2011 seasons

* Every-other-year restrictions: Beginning in license-year 2010-2011, anyone applying for a pronghorn license, or a public-draw Q (quality) or HD (high-demand) elk or deer license, may not have received a license of the same type the previous year.

There are drawbacks. It discourages new hunters (future voters) from taking up the sport. Especially as more and more states charge you 3 digits just to apply for a tag you know you can't draw for 5+ years and more and more areas are going to draw only.

SDHNTR, I'm pretty confident I have more points in more states than just about anyone here, you included. Maybe even Garth. I still like year to year, as it leaves more options open. Plus no need to worry about what happens when they change the system. Once you get some built up, locks you into an all or nothing deal for the best. And they are unfair to and discourage newbies.

My point is not that points suck, but more that CA sucks. I have said this about 3 billion times on this site and I’ll say it once more. I have max points on every animal and I have never drawn a tag. I have never met anyone that has drawn an Elk, Antelope or Sheep tag. I know that there are +400 people going for the same 1 tag and I understand there aren’t enough animals for everyone to hunt; but it just sucks when you have been putting in for a Tule Cow tag for +15 years and can’t draw a tag.

I’m really now concentrating starting my points in the other states and not wasting them on easier draws. But its nice to have states like NM where you have at least a chance on getting a nice tag on your first time applying (like I did last year

).

I don't know what hunts you are putting for but there are several Owens Valley antlerless tags with 50% draw odds for max point holders. Ed F

Cashe Creek and then I switched over to Grizzly Island when I moved to Fairfield. I think I’m going to give up the Tule and go for a cow tag up North. I wanted a “Cow Slam” but I think I’m just going to give it up.

There are pro's and cons to it all. I like a bonus point systems since new guys still have a chance, yet veterans are still rewarded with more chances, and I also like preference point systems since you can actually plan when you will draw. I'm glad there are both systems in place with different states. I just don't like a state that has no point system since it doesn't reawrd the truly comitted. Coues I definitely see your point, however I also think that persistance and patience is a worthwhile lesson for kids and those new to the sport. Like anything else worthwhile, you have work at it and put your time and effort in to be rewarded. You are right though, it really does suck that it is getting so damn expensive.

No, i don't know. But figure at least 15 points or whatever max is now for pretty much everything in the west minus four tags drawn in points systems somewhere along the way for me...Literally hundreds of points. I have drawn far more tags in the same time in non points systems draws. ID, WY before points, NM, Old CA before points.....

I agree that in NM you at least have a chance. I'm in the pool already in Utah so will bite the bullet to keep my precious points. I'll pay my NM fee's up front if they want.And SD what makes one a vet.? Because I had honeyhole's here I didn't bother trying to get points when it started.So now I never catch up,and I've been hunting a LONG time here. Iv'e been putting in for those good odds cows for years too. I know I can get a good hunt in NM more likley than not IMHO

I drew a decent archery elk tag in north central NM last year; my first year applying! Odds are good for most units. I think I had about a 35% chance in the area I hunted last year. I like having different systems in different states. I'm still applying in AZ for points only until I get 8-10 saved up. Until then I'll continue chasing elk in OR, NM, ID, or CO!
NM has some beautiful country, I wouldn't let the up front fee keep you from applying.

I like NM's draw the best (except for the outfitter/landowner tags). Year to year, no points, first available of three choices. So you just put what you want and what you would take, and luck of the draw determines your fate. And no, I do not feel having not drawn in the past entitles one to better odds at the expense of guys not in as long. I try to work the systems for what they are, fair or not. But I do not feel points are fair. Period. I guess they are OK for stuff that rotates over in not too long, but stuff that has poor draw odds, no way it's fair. Apply for more years, and odds are better you will draw, under any system.

Yeah that!

AZ want all their's upfront, in cash. No CC. I just sent in for my elk, $595, plus license, $151. If I don't get drawn in June, they hold the money till Sept. And I'm stuck with an AZ license I may or may not use.

For some reason I don't mind putting it on the credit card near as much as writing them a check. Don't hate it enough not to do it though. They sure have some good bulls in Arizona.

AZ is scheduled to release $$ for those who did not draw an elk or pronghorn tag in April....not September.
