1991 was the first time I ever applied and on my 2nd try I drew antelope. My friend had never applied before because the odds were too long, but after I drew he decided to roll the dice, and on his 2nd try he drew antelope.
Since then I've drawn G6, M3 and a bull tule where only one tag was issued.

sorry for the incorrect numbers(this is the internet),(4400 G3) and I'm new toJHO, but i've hunted here(CA) 40+yrs and it gets harder to draw a premium and the point sys. hasn't helped :not-worthy by the way recheck your accurate figures I believe it was closer to 300+apps. forG38 round valley35 tags

Welcome to JHO. I can only go by what the DFG puts in print/internet and it says 366 first choice applicants for G-38. Now you write "Round Valley", sorry that's G39... which only has 5 tags for 473 first choice applicants. Yeah, you are on top of these drawing statistics!!! No wonder it's hard for you to draw a tag in Ca. Ed F

sorry again,but i don't have the numbers in the top of my head, but you made my point for me-473 for 5 tags what are those odds? and for your info. I always draw a tag and usually fill it, sometimes a 2nd , just not a premium

put in last year for the first time drew unit 50 At Carson National forest. put in this year drew unit 52 at CN forest..

My girlfriend and I drew the 2nd archery hunt (Sept. 16-22) in unit 52.

I am pretty excited about this hunt. Have already taken 3 trophy sized bulls from other states. This year I just wanted a fun hunt to share with the g/f. She has never been to the Rockies, nor elk hunted. She is in for as treat. Have hunted units 53, 49 & 44/55 but not 52. Supposed to be loaded with elk, just not monsters.

This is going to be pretty cool because she's from China where there really is no public land hunting. Whole new experience for her. We will go high mountain trout fishing 3 days before the hunt as well.

With regards to New Mexico's no point system, I for one am very pleased with it. The reason being I have points stacked all over the place, some as many as 14. However, it's very nice to have a few states like NM & ID where a guy has a chance to draw a good tag the first year. Situations like this where I meet someone new to hunting......no other way we'd draw something decent. Struck out on 20 other applications this year but we had a chance and got these NM tags. I also love that there are states where a guy can get credit for waiting his turn as well via the point systems. Just hope there are always a few like NM.

Also highly prefer NM's system of the DNR utilizing all 3 hunt selections, where you can go for a great unit 1st & 2nd picks, but then list a good or average hunt 3rd if you want that. Worked for us. Our 1st & 2nd hunt choices were filled so we had this backup unit 3rd and are happy to settle for it.

I usually apply in NM almost every year and have yet to draw a tag. This year I put my son and daughter in for youth hunts and my son drew a 17 youth rifle tag for deer. He is so pumped!

no, i drew 2nd rifle 44/45, don't bowhunt anymore, just use the tactics for blacktails, muleys, and pigs, elk this year. my e-mail is hjwilkins@1goto.com. i'll get in touch , hank
