Been upland and predator hunting a while now. I'm ready to try some big game. Looking to hunt pig and eventualy black bear.

Just got a 30-06 with 1-3x20 weaver. Plan to load up some TSX.

I need help locating pigs on public land or atleast reasonably priced private hunt. 400 for tejon ranch is a little steep for me.

I'm looking for any tips on where to start. I have been googling it alot. I got some ideas of where to go. I'm not going to post the exact details as too many folks reading.

Plz, if any of you know where to go send me a PM! We can swap hunts. I have spots for all the upland birds. Some great jack and cottontail spots too. I upland hunt with a well trained beagle. I also have a few spots with lots of coyote.

Any info is appreciated. I realize public land pig hunting is like trying to find big foot!

I noticed on the DFG harvest map there where pigs taken on catalina. Can you hunt out there? i never been there i have no clue. I figure it was all private.

I read there is a new invasion of hogs down south around clevland NF but mostly private. I got a killer GPS map though that shows land ownership for hunters. Heard rumors of hogs all along the coast range. Know an area by SB that is promising for upland, coyote, and probably hogs too. Haven't hunted it but want to go back. Hollister BLM could be promising but very far away. I notice some hogs taken on the map in the sierra foothills too up by isabella but if I had to guess i'd say that is around the farms before you hit SNF.

I don't see what keeps the hogs on tejon ranch. Maybe adjacents lands hold pigs if you can get to it?

There is always FHL but I hear it is crowded and its a heck of a drive too.

Hope we can swap hunts! Thanks in advance for any advice, I need it!

Who makes it and how can I get one? I've been interested in Free Range Pork around Northern Cleveland NF for a while and that would really help. Too bad about Tejon Ranch. I think the cost would be worth the education you could get alone. I'll try to pass along info as I get it.

Follow this link. You can get a free trial for your GPS and its free forever on your computer. Can be a bit of pain to download but once you manage to get the entire file it is sweet.

Not sure about the northern Cleavland. I'm thinking the pigs are mostly down south twards palomar. They have them in the santa ana river bed in riverside but its illegal to hunt them. There is no water in the majority of northern CNF. Its also far to rough to even think about leaving the roads or trails from which it is illegal to hunt. The pigs would have to cross the 91 freeway and navigate alot of houses to get up there too. I have scouted it for upland and coyote. Really only one or two spots you could hunt and you need a 4x4. Closed gates should be open now or very soon.

Bryson/Hesperia offers a self-guided, semi-guided hog hunt. That's the best deal you're going to find. Deedy has lots of private land that she can put you into depending on where the hogs are hot at the time. She has cabins out there too so your drive time is short. She advertises on Jesse's.

No more pigs or goats on Catalina. They were eradicated. Plus, you either pay to hunt deer there or you have to know one of the residents, and still have to pay, just not as much.

OH ok that makes sense. I didn't think tree huggers would want anyone hunting or allow pigs to destroy the land.

As for hesperia that is close to home and sounds promising. Does the property back up to NF and BLM? I still don't see how a group of wild pigs could be contained. I hunt around hesperia atleast once a month dang near every month of the year. No pigs but I always see all kinds of other wildlife. Upland, deer, bobcat, coyote, rabbit, jacks, I swear even a snowshoe hare! Right at the edge of the forest there are all those acorns, prime food source for anything alive out there. I also like that you can get out of the lead ban zone, stupid condor.

Oh ok wrong hesperia!

tackydriver - I been reading for hours today. It seems there are some pigs in the northern cleavland NF all the way to OC but they are still few and far between but spreading. Still, the area is so steep hunting it is almost impossible. I think heading north is a better idea.

Honestly you have about a 1-2% chance of getting a hog on BLM land. If you actaully want to kill a hog for meat book a guided hunt. As many people have said by the time you actaully do kill something on BLM land you will have spent a lot more than $400.00 dollars.

Bryson Hesperia is not really cheaper than Tejon if you live in SoCal.
You can make it cheaper I guess, if you carpool and get your pig on the 1st day.
Bryson = $200 per day (Thats $400 for the weekend) + lodging + Gas from SoCal (about 5-6 hour drive)
Tejon = $450 for the weekend (2.5 days of hunting), camp for free, only a 1-2hr drive for most guys in SoCal
Neither place gaurantees a pig though.

Not necessarily true. They attempeted to eradicate all the hogs, but the island still has some.

I agree with JB229....Bite the bullet and pay for a guided hunt.

Heck I'd like to even see some sign on public land. I usualy hunt tward SBNF. I will start going north for all my coyote and quail hunting. Sounds good cuz I've explored everything east and south. I go so often I'm bound to run into hogs eventualy. I have seen even the most elusive species. 3 mtn lion, bob cat, bear, elk , sage grouse, blue grouse In eastern sierra, 2 snow shoe hair in SBNF, Moose in colorado, those stupid california condor. If you put in your time roaming you'll find them. Only things I haven't come across are turkey and hogs but I don't go in their range often and I have never been looking for them. It is only a matter of time if I start roaming their range. I got 25,000 miles in 4low, I'm bound to find some in the next 25,000!

Screw CA, my mom is moving back to Dallas in Jan! I'm going to ask for a hog hunt and bass fishing for xmas! If you get lucky you can probably shoot more hogs there in a weekend then you will in a decade in ca! Man the pictures of people with a pile of 20 hogs is awesome!

Hogs on Catalina - well maybe one at most

Not necessarily true. They attempeted to eradicate all the hogs, but the island still has some.

There is either one or zero hogs left on Catalina. I have that both from the CEO of the Conservancy (Ann Muscat) as well as the man (Kevin) who eradicated the last of the hogs (with dogs and rifle). Kevin now is in charge of the trails at Catalina. When I was deer hunting with Kevin last year on Catalina, he told me about this hog. There was one boar (old Henry) they never got on the West end but since there were no females left, they didnt' feel it was worth the effort to try to kill him. Old Henry had gotten very cleaver at avoiding the dogs. He has not been seen in several years and there has been no sign what so ever of any new hogs on the island. Kevin said if I saw Old Henry to go ahead and shoot him. Well being the optimist that I am, I did hear some grunting and put a great stalk on in some heavy cover in a steep valley only to find that I'd gotten into shooting position on a big bull bison! Too funny. I didn't realize they make sort of a grunting noise that I mistook for pig sound. Another step toward total enlightenment

Here is a picture of Kevin and my wife when he guided her last December and she had just dropped her first deer at 240+ yards.

I wouldn't shy away from a guided hunt at $400.00. If you're paying anything less, it just means you either know someone really well and you're getting a good deal or you're paying a lower trespass price with less odds. If you forking out 400 or better, pretty good chance you'll get one.

It's too bad the public land hunting sucks. You have to work hard to find a honey spot. That might involve a yearly lease fee you split with friends or consider joining a club. Some clubs offer full year membership for deer and pigs. That can be a min of 2 grand though. Good luck. :hog chewing:

527varmint, I agree about up north being more productive. But I love San Diego County and go there when I can. I'm just interested in bagging a hog in Cleveland NF while the novelty is still there. I thought it might be easier to avoid trespass in the northern section than in the south. Thanks to your tip on the HuntingGPS I'm not so worried and it may open up possibilities. Stay tuned for the film at 11...

I have been all over the N. Cleveland Forest (by inja memorial and Eagle peak rd) the last three weekends and have seen everything but pig.....rattlesnakes, turkey, deer, quail.....where the heck are all the pigs I wonder. I am going to try again and get my tagged filled before the end of June.....they say there out there, but its like a needle in a hay stack.
