At the recent Roseburg Sportsman Show a giant Roosevelt Elk was submitted for the competition of local game heads. The Oregon State Records Book allows a classification of typical and non-typical Roosevelt Elk, rifle, archery and black powder. This is the only classification of non-typical Roosevelt Elk there is. B&C and P&Y only have typical classifications for Roosevelt Elk.

Travis Price submitted the entry and walked away with the top spot for a non-typical. The elk became the new state record with a score of 381 5/8". As a typical elk, it will be submitted to P&Y with a score of 345 4/8", which is a pending No. 4.

The elk could be invited to the bienniel convention in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in April of 2007, as a possible top 5 entry.

Hi Bill,

Here's the skinny. I have measured and placed 4 Roosevelt Elk in the Oregon book. Two others will be placed in P&Y, one a 339+ (top 10 contender). All the big elk have come from Douglas County, one in the north end of the county and the other was south. We had a good spring rain last year and even the deer guys were saying that the mass on the deer was improved. These elk don't appear to be old timers either. None of these contenders had any crown points to speek of.

I've got one more show to go to (Medford, next weekend). Those guys from Josephine and Jackson Counties should have some awesome blacktails for us.

I'll keep you posted.

Dave

Dave, WOW!!! Thanks for sharing. Are you measuring at the shows for Northwest Big Game? Have you met a guy named Tim Brown? Just curious. Thanks again. Oh Yeah can you e-mail me a pin map of Douglas County with GPS coordinates of where these Rooseys are being taken. Ha ha. I would love to get up there and hunt the Roosevelts. I entered the RMEF drawing for a Ca Roosevelt tag. Ed F

There are a couple like that still hanging out at Finley Wildlife Refuge. l you need is $$$$ to get the guy who runs the duck club to let you take one. He and his son usually take them. They hang out with his cows in a pasture.
