My grandfather invited me to go on his elk hunt this year. Their old area got logged out. So they are trying a new zone. I guess we will be hunting the first general season in the Warner unit. I have some questions that hopefully some of you will be able to help with. Is it just an over the counter tag that I can pick up the day before the hunt? I'm having trouble finding any numbers on the area, Hunters success, number of tags etc... Also, I noticed there is a 2nd controlled hunt. Is this hunt more attractive because of the rut or migration reasons? Also, it has very few tags compared to other zones, which makes me wonder how many elk are there during the 1st season. Thanks for any and info.
Good luck to all,

You can buy the general season tag over the counter the day before the opener.1st period general season is for bull only,Oct.29-Nov.2. The controlled hunt is for any elk Nov.8-16.I don't know much about the Warner unit. The 2003 Oregon percentage tags guide should have all the stats.
Where did the elk go after the logging?

Warner unit huh. its not really a place id mark high on my list as a place to find many elk. as previously stated the first season is an OTC tag for a bull with visible antlers.

i also have to ask where they were hunting before where it was logged. logging really doesnt disturb elk. ive seen plenty of elk right on the edge of logging operations that were running at the time. they love to go in there at night and eat any moss from the fallen trees. its like candy to them. even if they do move its not far at all. usually just to the next drainage.

You know as I research this a little more I'm beginning to think this is an elk hunt excuse to get away from G-ma trip.

I saw in '99 there was a 4% hunter success. Oh well, I'm still gonna hunt hard and try to improve my chances. With research and maybe some more help from you guys my chances should go up. Looking at my calender I think the only time I can scout is mid august, is that going to be too early to get much of a read on the elk. I'll still go just too familiarize myself with the area. In reference to the loggin bit, I'm not sure where they hunted before. Well thanks for the help guys!
Good luck to all,
