I'm not new to hunting just to elk hunting. I'm planning on hunting my friends property in idaho (unit 39, i have no idea where that is, dont know much about idaho).

Any and all advice? I'll be hunting the any weapon season bull only. Do they migrate? what should I know going into this?

I've never even seen an elk........ Scouting isnt an option.

Through it at me..

I can't get the Southwest areas map to load, but I'm pretty sure the area you're talking about is mostly private land. There is a lot of elk around there, and if your friend owns land you shouldn't have a problem. Be aware that Idaho has the highest non-resident fees of all states, I think.

My bad, there is actually a lot of public land there. But still just as much elk. I've only hunted deer in this region but I've seen plenty of elk sign. I can't tell you where because there are plenty of people who would put money on my head if I did. Hopefully your friend will know where to take you. The elk will be out of the rut so you probably won't need any calls. But if I were you I'd pick up one of those cow elk calls that you squeeze the end and it does the work for you. (Bleat call???) Most archery stores have them.

Cheers

Lee,
Thanks for the posts!

My boss (the person who invited me) has been there before and seen a lot of elk just never hunted them before this year, the people living there have never hunted them either, it could easliy work out for me to take a bull. I know sense its private land anything can happen.

As of now we are hunting nov 1st through the 9th. Then traveling else where for a whitetail hunt around perce idaho for the next 10 days. I'm hoping to get studied up on the places maybe squeeze a muley hunt in there along the way..

ya their costs are somewhat high, license is around $130 and the elk tag is around $300 and deer $220ish. I dont remember the exact cost but thats pretty close. Not cheap but hey if I even see an elk then it'll be a start.

I can't believe your from North Cali and never seen elk before. The first time I ever drove down the 1 from Oregon to San Fran we saw tons of elk in the fields.

You'll see tons of White tail in Pierce. The whole upper pan handle has tons of white tail. Mulies could be your easiest hunt, If you're comming into Idaho by way of 95, just as you cross the border into Idaho you'll be surrounded by prime mulie hunting grounds. Go left go right, it doesn't matter, they are there. Get high early and watch the draws up the hillsides. Man I wish I could join you. Those are my old stompin grounds. I lost a lot of tie rods out there.

www.id.blm.gov this will tell you everything you need to know and where you can hunt on public lands.

Cheers

Norcal-Where in Unit 39 are you going or what area?I know that area and unit like the back of my hand after beeing born in Boise and doing a whole bunch of logging and hunting in that area before the influx of people.Several friends still hunt it but I moved out after High School to Central Idaho.I have taken alot of Elk from areas down there in the past and I know there still in there but theres alot of people depending where you go..

Best of luck..........Jayco.

I wont know for about a week. I'll let you know as soon as I do. The trips still very much in the making, I'll know as soon as I talk to the dfg and see what counties are in what areas, should be about a week.

I'll get back to you!

I found out that we will be hunting Robee Creek (sp?) in unit 39 for elk Nov 1st through the 9th. Its the any weapon season for antlered only elk.

I wanna look into seeing if there is any deer on the property. We are hunting my boss's friends place they have 5 acres then its connected to afew hundred acres that we also got permission to hunt. I would bet if theres any elk then theres deer also, my boss has been there and seen plunty of elk just in their backyard but didnt remember seeing any deer we've been tryign to get a hold of the people there but they dont have a phone? so its been hard to get info on the place, do you know if they'd be whitetail or muley in that area?

I'm hoping their deer and elk season run together. I need to get on their dfg's website and do some more reading.

Then from there we are traveling to Pierce for the whitetail season, my boss has hunted there every year for I think 5 years and only one year he didnt take a buck, I'm excited about that! I've never gotten a whitetail but have taken plunty of mulies and blacktails.

Any info/tips/suggestions you have send my way!

Here's that website again. There should be plenty of deer in that area. If you don't see deer something is wrong. They will definitely be mullies. However, they won't be the big narly mullies you get from the desert zones, the racks are more the size of whitetails, but you will definitely know they're mullies the first time you see them.

I wish I could join you, I'll be driving though Boise on about the 7th or 8th of Nov on my way to Tacoma, Wa.

Good luck

I pulled this up for my own info and realized the creek your talking about is right off of Lucky Peak Reservoir. I used to swim there in the summer. All I can say is pray for snow in the higher mountains, because without it the elk probably won't be comming down that low. I could be wrong, any one out there to correct me?

Again good luck. I'll stop plaegueing your thread now.
Cheers.

I very well may be in boise (nampa, bout 20 mins from boise) on the 8th or 9th, just depends on how the hunts going and if we are wanting to hurry up and get to peirce, we'll spend atleast a day there between our hunts, I dont know what your schedule is like when your driving through but if you wanna get together for coffee and were there at the same time that'd be great!

Yeah sounds good. Lucky peak reservoir, (the end of Robie Creek), is about 30 min from Boise towards Idaho city, and Nampa/Caldwell-my home, is 20-25 min from Boise.

sounds like a good hunt. Kind of late in the season though, all the big bulls have already clammed up, and are'nt chasing tail any more. Zone 36-in stanley area- Archery season opens Aug. 30-sep. 30. With Nevada elk tags costing $1000.00(non-res.), Those Idaho elk tags are very reasonable. I'm going to 36 2 days befor season. Good luck!
