Cue the Debbie Downers. I bought the spring permit a couple years. Many thought it was extravagant for $1K and last time I checked no silver spoon dangling out of my mouth. I had to cut a couple things out of the budget to do it but I had a ball roaming all over that great countryside on Tejon. I saved up to buy a spring permit again this year but it shut down. With just the north side now I probably won't because that's another 1hr drive for me WITHOUT traffic and in nasty fog sometimes.

$1k for a fall hunt access pass is within reasonable limits. $1400 for ONE turkey hunt is a bit much doncha think?

For some I guess. Pure Merriams turkeys only exist at Tejon in Socal so if you want that then you have to check the pocketbook. I'd buy a top of the line Harley if I had the beans. I just don't get all the cracks about silver spoon etc. For some who have done good in their business or saved their beans it's their choice. Why bad mouth that? Reminds me of the guys who constantly crack on guided hog hunts for $600 yet they spend that much or more every year to search public land over and over again and come home empty handed. Do the math. I used to buy the $400 UNGUIDED Tejon turkey tag until they took it away. $1200 for the guided turkey hunt at that time was too much for my budget so I hunted elsewhere. Not everyone is at the same station in life as you, some have the means to pay for a nice guided hunt. When I get older I hope I plan on being in that position so I can do one or two nice hunts and tuna trip a year. Are people going to badmouth me too?

Looks like they lowered the additional pig cost right? That's a decent reduction I believe. And wasn't the fall access limited to either 8 or 3 before anyways?

Any details on spring access or diamond memberships?

The problem isn't whether some people are financially successful or not. The problem is that by agreeing to pay that much for a single hunt, you've set the bar so high that the average guy can't hunt anymore. When only the most wealthy can afford to hunt, the hunting business is out of business. It's the numerous little guys who feed the money machine, not the few fat cats.

But hey, Tejon can charge whatever they want. And, as an attorney I probably make enough money that I can afford to pay $1400 bux for a hunt there. Doesn't mean I'm going to though. And that's the rub. If Tejon wants my money to hunt there, they'd better price it within the range I'm willing to pay. Not what I can afford to pay. Someone else can have my place in the outrageous rip-off line.

On top of that, we're not talking African Safari here Jesse. We're talking about a turkey. Regardless of the purity of the strain it's still just a turkey. Bragging rights about a trophy beard from a pure Mirriams strain turkey isn't worth TEN TIMES the going rate when you realize that you can hunt other places or in other States for LESS MONEY and still get your pure strain Mirriams trophy bird. Even if you can afford to pay the price, no one wants to look like they've overspent in their quest to buy a top of the line Yugo. Even if you spend the same amount of money to get one, your Yugo will never be a Ferrari.

$140 guided Merriams hunt in Ca????? Anywhere??? Care to list that guide or outfitter? Maybe 20 years ago. Tejon sets their prices for what the market will bare, not what hunters on the cheap want. I dont recall ever hearing from Tejon guides or managment that they were hurting for takers.

By the way, what kind of car do you drive? I hope you don't shoot one of them highfalutin Weatherby or bows. Why spend $1K on a bow when a $400 model will do the same thing? Right?

Doesn't appear to me that the guided hunts have increased dramatically in price. I'm still curious what the price and new restrictions will be for the management hunts though. Hopefully they wont decrease the amount of hunts to where each one will be maxed out. 100 hunters on Tejon is too many.

1400 could be a bargain turkey

$1400 for a turkey - sort of depends. I could only think of the chicken in "Sleeper" with Woody Allen. It is in the last 10 sec of this "hunting" clip. The background classic jazz is great too.

Now if that was the size of the turkey, it would be a bargain. I hear they have some like that up around VAFB, secret government experiments got out of hand and all....

+1 for k_rad and spectr17

Its all about priorities when it comes to money. People drop stupid amount of money on fixing up cars, eating out, drinking, etc... I'd rather skip all that mess and drop $5k on a diamond membership to have a full year of full access to the best hunting grounds in California. And I sure as hell wasn't born with any silver spoon. If I only went a few times it wouldn't be worth it and wouldn't make much sense. But if I'm only a little over an hour away, I'm there every other weekend. Passing up dozens of hogs daily, seeing nice bucks and huge bull elk almost each time I'm out there. Not to mention some of the best looking country around.

I have no intention of paying for a guided hunt at any point at Tejon, unless I wanted to treat someone to a quality hog hunt that might not have the chance to ever do it again. But as far as the fall/spring/diamond memberships, in my opinion well worth it if you can make it out there fairly often. There is a limit of course, and I haven't seen any pricing for spring or diamond memberships yet. But the old pricing was $450 for each additional pig, so the drop to $250 sounds real good to me. Take a few pigs and you're basically back to the old pricing if you look at the total.

Fortunately for them, and unfortunately for us, the income from hunting is a drop in the bucket for Tejon. It's not even significant enough to show up as its own line on the quarterly reports that they release to the public. I seriously doubt they give much (if any) attention to hunters complaining about the pricing. They've basically got something that really no one else has, so they can ask what they want and probably get it. Being a conservative, I believe in private property rights, and the rights of corporations to make a profit for shareholders, even when it sucks for me personally.

Tejon can and will do what they please period! Myself being able to hunt there the last few years on a weekly basis I will miss the freedom of driving 45 mins to the most beautiful ranch in ca!!! And seeing all the wildlife. I would drive from the south to the north sides and back in the same day..,, quite a bummer!

Jeeps are allowed... I got the 411 on why they banned utv's. Too many were going where they don't belong and getting stuck and the guides and helpers had to come dig them out!!!!! Thanks guys.

Tejon Ranch is going back how it use to be. Hunting for the rich. They just don't care about the little guy anymore. I just heard the other day that 45 special hunts were award for $6,500. Like I said they are just catering to the rich. I saw that they are charging a $ 1,000 to shoot a coyote. Hell I, guide a coyote hunt for $2oo and I will include lunch. So long Tejon Ranch I hope you go broke.
