Guys,

Many thanks for the education. You would be hard pressed to get onto our training areas to shoot! Is it common across the USA to have the public hunting and shooting on training areas?

Rannie,

Good luck in your new job, I doubt you will see me though I'm 6500 miles away in Scotland (but never say never).

Regards,

English

English,
In California, civilians are allowed to hunt in Fort Hunter Liggett(Army), in Camp Roberts(Army), in Camp Pendleton(Marines) & military persons only(both retired & active) are allowed to hunt in Vandenberg Air Force Base. All these military bases encompass tens of thousands of acres(2.4acre/hectare) & have wildlife galore(turkey, dove, quail, rabbits, coyote, deer, pigs, elk etc.). Fortunately, the military allows hunts on certain days/dates per State of California hunting rules/regulations.
Isn't that wonderful??? Don't know about other states. Hopefully they are also open to hunting in their military bases. 'Nuff said. God Bless. larrysogla.

Larry,

Thank you for the information now it gets a little more complicated - can you explain "tags" and licences to me?

I'm curious about the idea of a spring Turkey hunt because we have nothing like that - so what would you need and roughly how much would it cost?

In the UK you need a licence for the firearm you intend to use and once you have a"Licence to kill game" which costs £6 for a year you can kill ANY game whether its one bird or 1000 birds or deer for that matter, provided they are in season and either on land you own or on which you have permission to shoot.

Thanks,

English.

English,
Fortunately we still can own firearms(non-assault weapons) here in beautiful land of the free, home of the brave America without going thru a formal licensing process/documentation/screening. Some cities & states are more restrictive especially with handguns, but in the big majority of areas in the U.S., firearms ownership is still "no license required". California do have a 10 day waiting period while a background check is done on your criminal record if any. Certain convictions will bar a person from possesing/buying/borrowing/handling a firearm for life. Silencers are never allowed for hunting anywhere. It requires a special license just to posses one. Unlike the U.K. where silencers are legal for hunting.
Each individual State has their own hunting rules/regulations. California requires a hunting license for the taking of any wildlife. In addition to the hunting license, deer tags, pig tags, bear tags, bobcat tags, elk tags are required for the taking of those species. For birds/fowls, stamps are required in addition to the regular hunting license. Rabbits, coyotes, squirrels, fox, raccoon & other small game/non-game mammals require only the regular hunting license to hunt them.
I have heard of the growing population of wild boar in the U.K. & they are starting to make a comeback after the absence of many centuries. Hopefully you can bag one in your home country like we do here in the U.S. Hope this did not put you to sleep. God Bless the Queen. larrysogla.

Rannie,

Welcome, I think by just hanging out here in the forum you can learn quite a bit, but it sure doesn't beat spending time out in the field. Especially with a work site like yours.

See you soon...

Rannie,

I probably won't meet up at FHL anymore since I moved from CA. Since I was one of those who posted about my Cindy experiences I still wanted to welcome you and wish you good luck. From your participation here already I'm sure you'll be great. Cute pic!
