WOW, that thing is huge, the tine length up front is insane. Maybe a little trick positioning photography but still that's a monster. I can't wait to hear the story. Probably not a new world record though as the photo would remain under raps until the shooter could setup all his mag articles and money generation from it

LD once told me he saw a WILD HOG at Lake Natoma
<
Perhaps this bull was taken near the same spot LD saw his hog?

I saw the same picture last year too. I think someone said it was taken in Idaho behind one of those high fense ranches.

Okay, I remember hearing about that too. The high fenced deal.

He's still a whoppin' sombish, no matter where he was killed.

I don't know much about this elk, but I received a series of pictures of this bruiser elk. It sure looks like a high fenced ranch elk. But, it is the largest elk I have seen. I don't know how to attach the pictures. I tried, but the size of the files exceeded the attachment limitation. I have a picture of the elk in a field next to another that looks more like a red stag than a bull. The series of photos that were sent also show several with the same hunter with the bull. I heard something that last year a world's record was taken in Idaho, but it was a farm elk - high fenced elk.

I was thinking something similar... look at the crowns on the tips. One of the JHOers posted up his bull that had a semblance of "crowns", so I know it can happen... but those are really well-formed (look at the right side of the photo). Regardless of whether it's a stag or elk, it's one heck of a critter.

Spec...........if those "crowns" you're speaking of are the 3 point "trident" you see on the left antler, that is a characteristic of our modern day Red stags AND a characteristic that appears sometimes in mature Rocky Mountain and Roosevelt Elk species. From what I understand, they all hail from the same ancestor, and the trident feature was common on the ancestor. One of those recessive gene traits that is still a prominent feature in Red Stags.......

Are you guys sure the first picture is the same pic as last year? I remember seeing this one last year (which came off a high fence ranch in Idaho), but not the animal in the first post. Can anybody reference or link the post last year with the pic of the "trident" bull?

where did you guys here about the photo-chop ? Is that speculation or did some find some proof of a shop?I think it looks like a legit photo, or a darn good photoshop job. The rumor that I hear is that this awesome animal was a fenced hunt (no details beyond that). Also saw these velvet photos, which appear to be the same animal and could potentially support a fenced ranch (with supplemental feeding).
Again, all I have is links to the pics, no info, sorry.

This is what my taxiderist sent me, and what someone sent him..I know how stories get built up though.
I trust him, just not the one that sent it to him in the first place...
Us just saying it's photoshop without knowing if it is...is probly enough to convince enough people that it is.

Subject: Montana Record Elk

This Elk was killed with a bow in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness.
He green scored 575" and should net out at about 530" non typical.
He has an unbelievable outside spread of 79".
This is the biggest bull ever taken with any weapon.

Hey Chris, I don't think anyone was saying it's photoshopped.

For my part, I was commenting on the crowns, or tridents as Freedivr called them... and they do look like those of a red stag. Doesn't mean it's not an elk, only that it's kinda cool... and definitely shows the common ancestry.

As far as where it was killed and what kind of record it might set... don't know and don't care. That's a big critter and if it was killed "fair chase" then the hunter should be rightfully proud and excited at taking such a magnificent animal.
