My buddy and I decided to try our luck on an area known to hold hogs. Well the first morning we didn't see much except about half dozen coyotes. During the day I decided to walk by a creek to see if I could find any fresh signs. Eventually I came upon some tracks that looked to be about a day hold. I followed the tracks for about 300 yards which eventually lead to private property. I checked the fence line and sure enough pig hair was stuck between the barbs.

I decided to come back in the evening and sit at a high vantage point hoping to catch something crossing over to my side. At about 3:30 I was glassing the area and hunger struck me out of no where, so I decided to have some snacks. I was about half way through my cliff bar when I looked back down the canyon and noticed a bush that I hadn't noticed before. I quickly through up my binos and sure enough it was a hog. I have no idea where this hog came from but I was glad it was on my side. I ranged him at 237 yards, lay down my pack in front of me, put the cross hairs right behind the shoulder, and slowly squeezed the trigger.

I thought I missed since the pig took off running without a glitch. He was near a raven so I couldn't see which way he had done. I hiked down and to my surprise he only ran about 20 yards. He is an old pig with a lot of battle wounds.

As you will see from the pictures, I decided not to keep the meat. He had an old injury that was filled with green puss (look at the size of his rear knee). I could not describe how bad it smelled, both my buddy and I got gag reflexes. The injury caused him to lift his leg as he moved which eventually caused the cleft foot. In addition he had a tumor in his abdomen the size of a football.

Nice job. Well done making a plan based on sign and sticking with it. Good boar, he has good teeth. If you give them a wipe to get the blood and dirt off them, the show much better in the photo.

Right on!!! That's a solid boar. Bummer on not getting any meat out of'em, but sounds like it was a wise decision. A serious infection like that can spread throughout the body.

Again, congrats!

Good write-up. I always enjoy the story more than the pictures. That boar doesn't look like a meat hog anyway.

Personally you made a good dicision on not keeping the meat. Old hog will have a strong smell that won't go away. Try cooking an old hog pork chops with family around the camp fire. Trust me they'll hate you. Nice tuskers. That will make a nice European mount. The pic below I shot in 1997 was an old hog just as you shot. His ears were all torn and had puss balls on his chest and hind Quarters ,but he made a nice mount. I decided to use to real uppers and lower and tooth. Some people use other terms as wetters.

Nice boar!

Could you tell if the meat smelled strong? Bummer to lose that meat, but I reckon coyotes gotta eat too.

The meat looked normal to me. Since the infection was so severe I knew it would affect the meat as well. Once I smelled the puss I did not bother checking the rest of the hog out.

One thing I did notice while dragging the hog was a strong odor of acorn. If you guys ever bought those artificial acorn scents you would know what I mean.

Great job hunting! Too bad the pig was in a bad shape. Don't you just hate it when that happens?

Aw that sucks but I wouldn't have kept the meat either. Congrats on a possible new mount though :).

Very nice hog...Congrats!
Probably a real smart move to pass on the meat.
