Hi I am new to these forums. I have been around guns for a while but just never tried hunting. However recently friends of mine have gotten me interested in hog hunting.

I got very excited but now its a bit of a let down because while there are boar. Everything I have read says that very few are available on public land. The cheapest I have found for a unguided private land tour is around $200 which frankly is a little too rich for me.

I know the etiquette is not to ask for specific hunting locations, so I am not going to even go there. I would, however like to familiarize myself with some nearby areas by camping, scouting and glassing just to see what I can find. Does this sound like a good plan or am I just wasting my time and should try to save up for a private land hunt?

I am also having some difficulty figuring out what land is available to the public. I heard about the BLM but I can't seem to find a online map. I know of Fort Hunter Liggett and Tejon but those are a LONG drive from here.

I guess Putah Creek and Spenceville are closest to me. If I am reading right, I can't even hunt in Spenceville until September and Putah creek has really low #'s according to the DFG. Frustrating.

Anyway, I am rambling. Just isn't as easy as I thought it would be. Would appreciate any comments or advice.

Thanks in advance. -Dan

Dan -

Here is a link for online BLM maps. You are right about Spenceville being closed until Sept. 1. We do have quite a bit of National Forest available to us though. Nothing around here that holds pig that I'm aware of, but I would be happy to be proved wrong.

Hunter-Liggett or Tejon wouldn't be too bad if planned with others and shared travel expenses. I would also be interested in the $200 private land hunt if you wouldn't mind sharing where to find that.

Welcome aboard!

Thanks for your responses.
Slantop:
In regards to the comment about hunting deer. I am not opposed but venison is not my favorite. I don't want to hunt and waste the meat. I suppose I could find someone that would take some of it off my hands. I like the taste of pig, turkey, pheasant, duck and also rabbit for that matter.

Gvolle:
Thanks for that link. I actually found that map before. I just didn't realize that you could click on it and get more info. Thanks for curing my dumbness.

Others:
I don't want to post the name of the place of the $200 unguided location because its obviously a business and I don't want to get kicked off the forums for posting links. But if you PM I will forward the info to you. If it was $100 I think I justify it but at $200 and up it just doesn't sit right with me. Especially since there is no guarantee that you will get a boar.

Do you guys ever get together and go on hunting trips? If your in the greater bay area, count me in. I generally have a pretty flexible work schedule if I have some advance notice.

Dan-

Hogs are frustrating and can be fun. I would recommend hunting other game to familiarize yourself with the "how to hunt" aspects then try to go for hogs. That said, you can scout and scout and scout and learn a lot so go to dfg web site and find what counties have high pig kills, then find public land in those counties then go scout. simple as that, just don't have high expectations.

LMAO. i wish it was a jd. no it is a 3 hr drive to were i TRY to hunt. I unfortunatelly live in the middle of the central Vally. Yes pigs do live closer but the farmers around here just will not let you hunt the land they own. not that i blame tem. most of them sell the rights to pros and they charge the hunters to hunt the property. Not a bad dill for the guide but the farmer still ends up with crop loss and a mess. Unfortunately the average price is around $600 for a one day hunt. Well keep looking. The cost of hunting can be unreal but the reward is life changing. I did mt first guided hunt last october in wy. wow what a time. the people the guide and the game. the price was not that bed at $1300 for an elk and and antelope. but i still like the ruff stuff. ie no guide it just fells more rewording to know that you out thought and hiked one of natures smartest animals. (or just got lucky) have a good one
