I have been in target shooting sport for several years. I had a hunting winchester 70 bolt action 30-06 with Leupold vari X-III. I also finished a hunting safety class in last year. However, I have no clue/ experience with Hog hunting. I am really interesting into this hunting but I don't know where to start. Can you give me an advice or what I should do in order to learn. I am really appreciated if some one can let me tack along their hunt to learn. I am willing to share the expense in your hunt such as gas; food; lodge..etc and I am 37 yrs old man with a good health/shape. So, I don't problem with the hiking. Currently, I am living in San diego. I'm looking forward to your reply and thanks in advance

Welcome to the addiction pigeater
<
, and to JHO
<
and this forum for that matter.

I'm sure you will find lots of help here. Unfortunately your timing is just a tad behind. They just had a JHO pig hunt at the Tejon ranch which would have been a great source of experience with a bunch of knowledgable regulars on this forum. I am sure they would have taken you out and showed you the ropes. The rope would have been tied to a hog at the bottom of a canyon, but there is no better way to start learning than dragging an animal out of some steep country. Also if you act fast you still have time to purchase a deer application and grab a booklet then put in for the 2007 big game draws. Ther's a bunch of guys putting in for X12 and you should also try your luck. Either way you will begin to earn preference points for future draws.

It may seem like an unsurmountable task to learn how to hunt, it was for me, but it is well worth it. I did not start hunting until I was 38 and I'm now 44 and still learning myself. It may take awhile, a lot of time and patience, but when you finally harvest your first big game animal you will be hooked for life. Stick with this forum and don't be afraid to ask questions. I wish you the best of luck....

Hello Pigeater:

Welcome. I suggest that you start out by going on one or two guided hog hunts. There are several good guided hunts available. You will learn how to find hogs, identify shooters, how to act on a hunt, how to handle your firearm around others, and what to do after you have an animal on the ground. After a few of those hunts, you will feel more comfortable hunting on your own or teaming up with new friends.

Good luck.

I understand where you are coming from. But, here's how I see it. This is just my opinion. Big game hunting is not the type of hunting where you want somebody to "tag along." It can be dangerous, and there is a lot of effort put in to a hunt, be it deer or hogs. There is no pig hunting in San Diego. There is some public land, or free, pig hunting up in central Ca. However, the pigs are far and few between. It's not worth driving to central Ca to hunt public land where your success rate might be 1 in a 100. So, from here my hunting consists of paying $450 to hunt on Tejon Ranch which is only a four hour drive from San Diego. Another option would be to purchase a guided hunt, or semi-guided hunt from one of the outfitters like, Choppers, or Bryson Hesperia Resort, or Tejon Ranch. I opt to hunt self guided, so I'm not interested in a guided hunt. However, being new to hunting with firearms, you should go on a guided hunt or two.

Because the Tejon Ranch hunts are 2 1/2 dayers, and expensive, and only happen a few times per year, there is some planning that goes into them. I like to go with a few of my hunting friends that have earned my trust. It's not a type of a hunt where you want to commit to taking somebody that you have never met or hunted with. It's not a tag along kind of hunt. Being around firearms can be scary if you don't know the players. It's dangerous.

I really think you need to look at the hog guides in the hunting section of this website and pick an outfitter that will show you the ropes. Tell them you don't have any experience and let them show you. After you have learned a few things, then it would be time to meet some of the JHO members at one of the organized hunts like we had last week at Tejon Ranch.

I just want you to know why there aren't a bunch of guys inviting you to tag along. Everybody here loves to help people get started in hunting, and will offer up lots of good info. You just need to do the due diligence first, and hang around on Jesses for awhile.
