I am looking at purchasing another pair of glasses for an upcoming elk hunting trip to Colorado, and deer hunting in Wisconsin. I am looking at the Nikon Action series in 7-15x35 or 8x35 fixed. They have a 25 year no fault warranty.

I am concerned about fogging, and the lack of being waterproof. Will these binocs stand up to an occasional rain? Are they water resistant and/or shockproof?

I have only been able to get limited information from department store clerks, so any information or experiences would be helpful.

Thanks!

I haven't had the opportunity to try out that particualar model, but chances are if they are not guarenteed waterproof/fogproof then they aren't. It would only take a couple hours of rain and they probably would fog up. It's been my observation that even some that say they are, still fog up. If you want waterproof/fogproof/shockproof, then the Nikon monarch ATB's are the way to go.

It's been my expierience that trying to save a little cash by buying the cheaper model ended up costing more in the long run. Basically the cheaper one didn't do what I wanted it to do, or what the manufacturer said it would do and I had to buy the more expensive one anyways.

Also, have you considered the 10x42's? I think they are better for glassing. With the higher magnification, I can pick out more game, and also have to pull out the spotting scope less. Sure the 35mm lenses are more compact, but IMO they cause more eyestrain after hours of glassing.

There's water resistant and waterproof. If it doesnt say that they are, then they probably are not.

I wanted/needed waterproof binos and couldnt part with the $$ for the Monarchs so I went with the Nikon Tundra in a 10X50. They are heavier than I like for long hikes in but they are very clear and they do the job. Bought them through a Camera shops Ebay store. Goodluck!

I own the Nikon Monarchs ATB, they are great! tuff as nails and clear as day!
I got them on E-bay for 217.00? no camo.

Cabelas and bass pro has them for 289 or so.

I have a pair of the 10x50 "Action" optics from Nikon.

I do NOT recommend these binos for hunting.

The optical quality is great BUT they are not fogproof! Almost
every morning and evening in the mountains when it is cool/cold they
will fog up from your breath. This time of day of course is when you are
most likely to see game so its very frustrating. During the day when it is warm, they are fine. I will never buy a pair of binoculars again that are not fogproof.

Nikon now has an action "Extreme" line that is basically the same lineup
as the regular action series but they are sealed and nitrogen purged so they are water +fog proof.

Also in the same category+ price range of the action Extreme is the
Bushnell Legend porro prizm binos. I just ordered a pair of these in
8x42 because they have the "rainguard" coating that I know from my
Bushnell Elite scopes is very effective.

, but at the very least get a fogproof model, and if you can afford it, go to the roof prizm models (Nikon Montarch ATB, or Bushnell Legends are both good candidate for under $300)

I "had" a pair of Nikon Action Series in 10x50. I was having MAJOR fogging issues. I finally got fed up and took them back to Turners. They gave me a credit and I got the Leupold WindRiver 10x50's, A LOT lighter and fogproof...These are some SWEET glass.....
