Anyone up for hunting NM 5b archery?
<
A couple of the rifle hunts in that unit are Q instead of S tags. But the archery tag is an S (standard tag price = $460). Draw odds for OTC tags run 10%.

It's not known for super bulls but there are decent numbers of elk there. It's an either sex unit wide archery tag voucher. Season's Aug 30th - 18th.

I'm not going to be out there til Sept 11 but people from our party will start showing up around the 3rd I think. Our party's down to 6 instead of 7 so I'd pass the voucer along at cost--PM if interested.

It's a self-guided hunt with permission to hunt 2 ranches. One ranch has 3 water tanks and I'm not sure about the other. Pretty nice camp spot too. There's also a wilderness area (chama river wilderness) fairly close to camp. A couple herds work the plateau around the camp area.

You can mail off for the tag or buy the tag in person with the voucher at a DFG office on your way there.

Forgot to mention, the landowner authorization would be $150 + a $50 donation made to JHP--one heck of a deal if you call around. Typically they go for quite a bit more than that...just am passing along a good deal.

The terrain in this unit is relatively mild in some parts to rugged canyon/mesa country in others, and also a couple of tall mountains. It butts up against the Jicarilla Indian reservation to the north. To the south it bumps into the unit containing the famous Valles Caldera. It's been closed to deer hunting for 3-4 yrs and the odds of having super buck viewing/photo ops is there too. Only 15 rifle buck tags were issued this year.

Anyway, you could hunt it solo or join our camp. Whatever suites your style--yours to do with what you will.

Sounds like a great oppurtunity. I i did not already have a hunt planned in CO in Sept i would look into it.
This sounds like a good deal for someone.
Thanks for the post.

Thanks PaulC~! I wish I had known a bit earlier that one in our party didn't need the tag--but such is life.

Season opens this coming Saturday and ends Sept 18th. The landowner heard his first bugle of the season this last Saturday--it's shaping up to be an earlier rut than the last 4 or 5 years....

Sounds like we archers might have the full rut going on this year during the season.

You just HAD to put that, didn't you!?

I am going up Tuesday evening through Thursday morning, with my video camera, to sit on the area where I had all the camshots earlier this year. Hopefully

I will have footage to share ALONG with stories of numerous bugles.
