Been seeing some monster bulls ,on hoof and in trucks. One filled a bed with the rack!!! Hoping they are 1/2 as big in the Jemez Mtns. I'll have landownertag to use next year.I'll send some pics when I figure it out.The Gila area is as good as they say,I now have ranch across the Hwy in unit 12.New life in NM.

Good luck out there, sure is a great state for elk. An awesome success story for sure.

Congrats on your move over there. That area south of 40 below Grants is pretty country. Most of the elk are down in the 15s & 16s from what they say but 10 & 12 are alright from what I hear. Huntin' fool and others have recommended 10 & 12 now so it'll no doubt be much harder to draw--and not nearly the elk densities as the 15s & 16s so a very good thing that you live there to get it dialed in. I'll be heading near your area in about a month from now for a muzzleloader hunt just to the east of you.

Your right about densities in 12 and 10 ,but they are right around me on BLM. Seen some sign on ranch and have all the time in the world ....when the well barn,elec....are in.But my draw hunt in 6A should be good. Give me a buzz when you get here, if I'm not out hunting...

One thing I learned is that elk are often in areas you would not expect. Without having time to dial it in a bit, you almost have to stick to areas known to produce. Send me an email and I will give you a call. I will be in elk camp only six days the se ond muzz season--short hunt. I will be about 2.5 hrs from grants so I plan to stay in camp the whole hunt. Then I need to hightail it back to CA to catch the last part of the G1 hunt.

You're right. Some good goat country around there too. A friend from Farmington who's meeting me down in Elk camp shot an archery buck this year just a few weeks ago in that general area. He went 72". He and 3 others all got their bucks--all archery. Tough to draw especially for non-residents.

Yeah I'll have to figure different odds now that I'm resident. But i think if I just have one sure thing on an application I'm good.Looking at landowner deer tags to trade my elk for as an option. Nice that I might still get elk landowner tags in the lottery, ranch got a bull and a cow this year. The speed goats I've seen are real big in the area.
