Looks more like most non-residents will have to go with a "outfitter/guide".....would not be suprised if they were behind it...time to watch more small towns that are dependant on hunting seasons for income go to ghost towns.... when the non-res don't come back.

Email sent.

Dear Senator(s),

My name is Todd Harney and I am a 22 year old avid bowhunter from CA. I know you are busy so I will make this quick. I have had the opportunity to hunt for elk in the great state of New Mexico twice. These were not just hunts, they were life changing experiences. Some of the country that your state has to offer is like none other in the U.S. I am saddened to hear about the cuts you are making to non-resident tags. New Mexico is a place I would love to continue to hunt, and to take my kids there to hunt one day. But now I feel as if that dream will only be just that... a dream. Please do not cut off those of us who love and respect your state and it's wildlife. And if nothing else, please remember how much the out of state hunters provide in the way of economy for small towns like Reserve, Datil, and Chama. Please reconsider, before it's too late.

Signed,

Todd Harney

Looks like a revised bill is going through and is likely to pass. Changes the percentage splits to the draw from 78 resident/12 nonresident guided/10 resident regular to 84 resident/10 guided/6 nonresident. Plus no nonresident cow tags...And a $65 annual hunting license just to apply..

I'll pass on applying for NM if that passes. Too much $$$ for too small a chance at tags...

Maybe you guys should lobby the CADFG to reciprocate. Oh’ wait….that would mean California would have to lower the cost and issue MORE nonresident Elk tags LOL!

That would actually mean something if there was a large population of elk IN California. And, WHY would you want to hunt California? I'd rather go to Craig Colorado, or Wheatland Wyoming.

Fat chance getting New Mexico's elected public servants to listen to an out-of-stater. You aren't voting for 'em!

As a matter of fact, I have wrote CA DFG telling them the way they only allow one nonresident sheep or elk tag is completely unfair...at least make a 10% cap like most other states...For sheep it's less an issue as one tag isn't far from 10%..But I agree, total BS on elk. They said there are bigger fish to fry.. Draw odds are so poor that a tule elk bull isn't something you are likely to draw in your life with or without the nonresident 1 tag limit.. again, all the more reason to at least make the draw better to nonresidents. A CA hunter serious about elk hunting has to go out of state.

You aren't likely to EVER shoot a Tule elk. Not unless really concentrated efforts are made to increase the herd. It could happen. With the current California climate? No way.

Same here, OR did the exact same thing and doubled NR fees. Does not make sense to spend that kind of money with those lousy odds...
Speaking of lousy odds even for a resident, 367 total elk tags in CA and over 20,000 applicants...
