Got within 150 yards of a herd of elk today just to see if they have had any calves yet. Didn't want to spook them cuz the cows looked heavy with calves.

740 full zoom with no rest, just aim and shoot and hope for the best.
Cropped to to make better picture.

Great shot!

I just bought an Oly C-770 and am having fun getting used to it.

When you say that you were at "full zoom" does that mean you were at 10X optical or were you full optical x 4 digital for a 40x effect?

Also were you on auto or on some other setting like portrait/landscape, landscape where you varied the ISO, etc?

Thank in advance for the for the info!

I've found that the best setting for me with animals and bird pictures is to use the setting for action pictures.
I just use the 10 power optical zoom. I can the crop the picture to get the best photo with the computer and get better results than using the digital zoom.

Here's a picture I have of a woodpecker.

Thanks, Cliff!

I took my first bird pic today and had to take it quickly as the hen turkey wouldn't stick around for long.

I had the Oly 770 on 10x Optical on portrait/landscape with an ISO of 400 speed...it was cloudy and had just finished raining.

I appreciate the tips...I'll try action next time. I assuming your using the Auto with this...am I correct. I also sprung for an Oly xD 512MB card for plenty of space and the panorama feature.

Awesome shot for freehand, I wish I had half the wildlife to shoot that you do!

Great shots Cliff, and thanks for the tip also!

Everything is auto when I put the setting in action mode. Without my reading glasses and can barely make out the symbols. I also use the same setting when in macro, it's hard to keep up with the bees and small critters.
On long shots I always keep both eyes open as I do when shooting a rifle or bow, it's easier for me to keep the animal in the view finder.

Be sure to take lots of pictures, one always seems to be the best.

Have fun and enjoy---pretty soon you'll have thousands of photos.

coyotebandit.... I do feel lucky to live in an area thats open year round for the public. It's all gated now for walk in but makes for the best hunting you could ever imagine. Have been hunting this area for 50 years and know every inch of thousands of acres. I mostly study the animals now, but have been tempted to go after a couple of large bucks.
