Exploring the great outdoors for notes, quotes and anecdotes ...
"You never get something for nothing" is an adage that doesn't apply Saturday to would-be anglers throughout the state. That day they can fish for free, no fishing license required.
Each year, as a part of National Fishing Week, the Department of Fish and Game designates two days on which anglers aren't required to have a license while fishing.
The program is designed for anglers to introduce others to the sport without them having to purchase a license.
The other free day is Sept. 23.
Trophies for Big Fish and Most Fish are up for grabs Saturday at the 16th annual Free Youth Fishing Derby at Lake Gregory.
Age groups are 7 and under, 8-12 and 13-15. All kids will receive free goodie bags and be eligible for drawings. Trout will be stocked before the event.
Sign-ups begin at 6 a.m. next to the boathouse. Weigh-ins, awards and prize drawings begin at 11 a.m. Call (909) 338-2233.
Another free fishing event for kids Saturday takes place at Follows Camp on the East Fork of the San Gabriel River. The Arroyo Fly-Fishers is holding its fifth annual Youth Fly-Fishing Fair from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
Twenty instructors will offer free fly-fishing seminars to kids of all ages and their parents. For details, call Frank Kuhn at (626) 444-9201, ext. 275.
