What a year! Went morel hunting for first time tonight with my nine year old and he found his first morel. It was exactly one inch long and broke off lying on ground. He usually follows me; I must have stepped on it or kicked it over and he found it! Some may have read that both my sons found their first sheds this season - now my nine year old has found his first morel (my 5 yr old is next). He came up behind me and said 'look - but it's tiny'. I told him that a thirty year old with 20/15 vision walked right past it - he must have great eyes to spot a morel of that size. He smiled and was content the rest of the evening. Pretty cool stuff!
Can anyone tell me the sure fire way to be sure what I'm picking is a morel and not some poisonous clone? I'm sure that's probably a loaded question but I'm still deer scouting and turkey hunting and finding mallard nests, looking for that one last shed and love mushrooms. I've never picked a morel but am sure I've seen them and could find them if I concentrate along the way. Any tips to keep from picking the wrong mushroom...are there poisonous ones that mimic the real morel?
There are many good sites, here is an example of one. I only eat true morels, as they are nearly impossible to get confused with others. I don't eat the half-free or the false- morels.
wow nice find on the morrels. i miss finding them. i've been in alaska for the past 4 1/2 years and yes found a couple the last couple years but nothing worth a shit. wish i was back in illinois finding some right know. congrats
