I am heading up to VAFB in a couple of weeks to do some hog hunting so called the game shack today to clarify a few things. There is NO lead ban on vandenberg air force base, not yet. They said they where still trying to hash things out with the state, what I am not sure of. They said it would be quite a while before a ban took place, but I would call before driving up there just to make sure. I hopes this helps out some of you guys!

You are correct; they have backed off their initial decision to go lead free on January 1. The state law takes affect on July 1 and VAFB is in the proposed ban area, so get ready.

The Rod and Gun Club does not at present have centerfire rifle loads in non toxic ammo yet. We do have muzzleloader bullets and shotgun slugs that are. We will try to get well stocked with the most common "flavors" before too much longer.

Will you guys carry 20 g. copper slugs? I am having a hella of a time finding them and my wife hunts with a 20. Sorry, I just read the latest posts on the original thread about the VAFB ban and saw that someone already mentioned the delay on the ban. Make sure you have 30-06 180gr Federal vital shock!LOL

hopefully you can see this picture good its about the california non lead ammo legal for hunting what i found is that on some of these slugs you have to be careful what you buy because some slugs are only for slug barrel thats when i found the foster slug for smooth barrel this list shows that the 20 gauge barnes sabot slug is legal but im not sure if its for smooth barrel or slug barrel. good luck

The sabots are generally for rifled barrels. You might try them from your smoothbore, as they sometimes give passable groups at closer ranges (50 yards or so).

410,

Are they ultimately going to follow state rules on 1 July?

As Vandenberg AFB is in the section of Zone A above Ventura County that is included in the proposed lead ammo ban, VAFB will definitely be included in the 1 July closure.

I may start a thread polling Vandenberg hunters on their preferred ammo to give us a good idea of what to carry in the store. The Barnes etc. stuff is so damned expensive that we have to be cautious on what we stock. We don't have an unlimited budget to work with.

Thought maybe since its federal property Mercer might have an exemption or something.

Definitely on the poll for the gun club stocking. Thats a good idea. Just torques me off that right after Sept I went and bought 5 boxes of 12 ga winchester supremes at a cost of nearly $100.

Mark me down for 12 Ga 2 3/4 sabot hollowpoints and .30-06 165gr and/or 180 gr. (for some reason the rifle likes the heavier bullet)
