Hey guys,

The recent handgun discussions got me to thinking (dangerous!), and thought it was worthwhile just to mention that CA regs do NOT allow the use of frangible bullets (bullets meant to disintegrate rapidly on impact) for hunting big game. Some examples include the Extreme Shock and Sinterfire offerings, as well as some bullets from Glaser/CorBon.

There are a lot of frangibles being marketed right now to home defense and law enforcement shooters. These are often lead-free, but they are NOT legal for use in your hunting guns if you are hunting big game. They're fine for non-game like ground squirrels and coyotes.

The DFG maintains a list of all of the ammo and bullets that are legal to use in CA. If you find a non-lead ammo that is NOT on this list, you can contact the manufacturer to see if they have submitted their bullet for certification. The process is simple, and requires very little of the manufacturer, however; if the manufacturer is not on the list, you cannot legally use their ammo to hunt in the condor zone.

You can find the list at: http://dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/hunting/condor/certifiedammo.html
