Hey guys was wondering about trying to maybe do some Az elk hunting. I have spent enough time the last three fire seasons in Arizona looking at burned over elk or finding there sheds while cutting hand line. Basically just looking at how the process goes. Are there over the counter tags or do I need to apply for the Draw? Any advice on what zones to put in for would be appreciated. It would be archery only also. I was on the Wallow fire two years ago in the Apache Sitgreaves NF so I am familiar with what to expect terrain wise out there. Again thanks for the help I get more information from this great site than I usually do on the state websites! Take Care Russ!

Getting a good tag without any points is not going to happen buy a hunting lic. and buy a point this year or apply for the draw and get a point its a good start if you want a over the counter tag look at Colorado
good luck

russ209, hunted the Eager, Springerville area just one day after they opened the forest following the Wallow fire. It was a left over archery antlerless tag for the Coon Canyon hunt and I had the most incredible four day solo hunt of my life culminating in a missed 50yd shot in the final hour of the hunt. Look up leftover tags after the draw. This year the Coon Canyon hunt area has been combined with the Flat Top hunt to allow for a larger area of Unit 1 to be hunted. Good luck!

I bellieve Az archery is over the counter. You can check on this on the Az F&G website.

Thank you for all of the info so far you guys I put in for areas I worked around. So are there OTC tags? My roomate this season on the crew said he always got an otc tag for elk and mulies archery only every year but when I checked out the AFG website it was confusing.

Archery hunts are part of the draw but I have found there to be a significant number of leftover archery hunts after the draw putting them on a first come first serve bases. The only thing I was having trouble finding was the actual draw date.

Draw date is Tuesday, March 19. Make sure you've got the coin available on the credit/debit card you provided em because if your card is declined, your tag goes bye-bye. Are you ready?
