Hey redneck, is that a Boss on your rifle? Also, just for the info, what type of bullet were you using? Thanks a lot and again nice story and pics.

Yeah, it's a BOSS...kind of. I got this rifle when my little brother died. It had the factory BOSS (ported) on it. I took it to the range and realized it shoots a whole lot better than my Ruger does. I got it all dialed in shooting absolutely perfect and took it hunting. The first morning, I came across a coyote and shot one time. Yes, it dropped the doggie (imagine that with an -06) but I was actually dizzy from the muzzle blast and I didn't hear right for about 3 days. I walked 2.5 miles back to the truck to get the Ruger back out. That was back in March. I got online here at JHO and complained and somebody told me about the Browning CR Device (stands for Conventional Recoil). Apparently, a bunch of people have complained about the BOSS and it's muzzle blast. This thing screws in and out, allowing you to tune the barrel, just like the BOSS. No gunsmith work required, just unscrew the BOSS and screw the new one on.
The only difference is the CR is not ported so you don't get the tremendous muzzle blast. It does kick a bit harder but it's not any worse than any other -06 so it's not a problem. I shot 6 times with it on Friday morning and my ears didn't even notice. No ringing or problems hearing afterwards at all. The best part...it only cost about $30.00 online. Best $30 I ever spent!

I know a lot of people are going to give me a hard time for my choice of ammo. I'm shooting factory 180 grain Remington Express Core-Lokt. I've shot the 180 grain Core-Lokt forever. A buddy bought two boxes of the new stuff for a hunting trip with a borrowed rifle. He never pulled the trigger so I ended up with two boxes of free ammo. I didn't realize until 4 days before the hunt that these were the blunt-nosed bullets instead of the pointed soft point. I was pretty pissed but they shot pretty well...they were only 2" high at 100 yards as opposed to the 3" that the pointed bullets were hitting. They were right on line and grouped real well so I decided to go with it. I've always hated blunts but these worked just fine out at 300 yards on this pig. My last shot (from about 10-20 yards) hit the pig square in the right shoulder. It shattered that shoulder, took out the spine and destroyed the left shoulder before exiting. With performance like that, I guess I can't really complain much. I'll definitely be back to a pointed bullet for my next hunt but it worked well this time.

Why give you a hard time for that?

First of all, it's a known performer. You just proved it again, but folks have been killing game with that bullet for a long time. So you're successful.

Second of all, it's less than half the price of the "Premium" ammo (even cheaper, since your friend gave it to you.). That makes you successful AND thrifty.

I shoot a bunch of different premium ammo in my 30-06, some handloaded and some not. Mostly, it's just because I like experimenting...as if some magic combination of rifle and bullet will one day strike the bull with nothing more than a wishful thought on my part.

But as long as I have to line up the crosshairs, breathe right, and manage the trigger pull... the Core-Lokts still stack right up there with any $50/box ammo. It's about all I shoot in my .308, my .243, and my 30-30.

No ragging here..A dead pig is a dead pig.

But a HUGE dead pig is even better.

I've got to agree, a dead bruiser is hard to argue with the performance of the bullet . I felt the same way when I shot 165 Sierra out of my 7 mag, but hey, they dropped some pigs just like my 160 Partions did. I prefer the Partions now, but that's after some experimenting.

thanks for the info on the CR, sounds like something to look into. I haven't heard of that yet so I'll find out what I can about it.

Thanks again and take care.

nothing at all wrong with Remington Corelocts. I've killed a couple truck loads of pigs with them in a few different calibers.

I'vew killed a bunch of hogs with "conventional" bullets - lots of Corelokts, Hornady Interlocks and the old Nosler Solid Base, all in 180 gr version from a .300 Mag.

I must agree that I would have loved to have that hunt on tape. I don't regret my decision to forgo the camera though. I was plenty nervous enough as it was, I didn't need the extra pressure. I actually had one point where I didn't look at the pig for a few minutes so I could calm myself back down and get ready for the shot. I only looked at it through the scope once before shooting and I spotted those lips all wrinkled up so I knew I better not look at it too much more.

Jason was real cool about everything. There's not a whole lot of guides who work as hard as he does and he's a great guy to boot. I will book another hunt with him in the (hopefully) fairly near future.
