In the unlikely event that one of us JHOer's gets drawn for one of these hunts, does anyone have any ideas of where some good herds are hanging out? Generalizations are fine and would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Mike

Yep, we know of almost all the herds and would be willing to point people in the right direction if we don't get drawn ourselves. If we do get drawn, then we don't want to be giving away the hot spots before the season. Sorry I won't help you more right now, but if we're not drawn, then we will be all kinds of help to another JHOer!

Seeing that there are so few tags available in such a huge area to hunt, I really have a hard time believing it matters whether you're drawn or not. Thanks but no thanks. I'll count on some other members with whom I've shared my own hot spots even though I was drawn also. It's the true JHO spirit I believe.

I was not even going to post yet, but Ranchwifes post was my feelings exactly! I don't feel that is ungrateful, thats just being smart. A person is only going to draw this probably once in their life (maybe) and they will want to find the biggest bull possible. At that point you do not want to compete for him and especially not with someone you told about the area.
If you draw an Antelope or Elk tag in the Modoc/Lassen areas I know and I don't I'll help any way I can. If I draw it, I'll keep my info to myself and pick the brain of anyone who will talk. That is hunting... I have areas I deer hunt that I'll NEVER share with anyone else. Most folks do.

Reread the post. I simply asked for GENERALIZED info. I would never impose myself on someone elses spot. I guess I'm a bit disappointed in the way the "Old School" has fallen by the way side. It's now a me me me world out there. I certainly didn't mean any disrespect to Ranchwife. I simply said no thankyou. I'm not so sure I'd take perfect strangers from this site hunting at my private spot as I have in the past. Nor do I think I'd direct anybody to a known honey hole on public land as I've done in the past. I guess it's time to wise up and join the "Me " generation! Once again, no disrespect to you ranchwife, just a courteous "No thank you ma'am"

Mike,

Having seen the elk in these areas, I can honestly say there are not that many elk in the zone and they are not evenly dispersed. Year after year we see the herds in the same small areas. In my opinion, do to the island type nature of their distribution it would be hard to give a general idea.
I'm sorry you feel this is selfish of someone, but I still feel that is just a smart way to go and I'd never begrudge someone keeping their info to themselves. For all I know the herds I have seen are not known to Ranchwife and vice versa. Should her party draw and ask for info I'd compare notes to the benifit of both of us.

Well put. Please don't think I'm disgruntled, cause I'm not. I've been around long enough to know good spots are hard to come by. I certainly wouldn't blame anyone for not sharing, hence a 'no thankyou" instead of something rude. I know there are elk in the warners, and in a couple other spots. If I'm drawn for archery or not , you can bet you'll see an honest in depth scouting report for all to benefit from me.
