Well, I've been here on JHO for a few years now.

I have finally taken my first Big Game Animal!!!

There is nothing better than FRESH pork, that you spotted, stalked, shot, and cleaned all by yourself. I butchered it with help from Speck.
<
I can finally tell people that I am a HUNTER... not just an outdoorsman.

Story and pics to follow in a day or two. Gotta run! Just couldn't wait to start this post.

Sincerely,

Jesse

Congrats, Jesse! I was real happy for ya!

Of course, now you're gonna be out 'til all hours replicating the feat. Probably time for a new freezer.

I got some good video of Oz at the skinning pole Sunday night. You couldn't have beat the grin off his face.

Welcome brother Oz to the big game club

Jesse hit that hog with a 300WSM. I was admiring the hole since it looked like what my 300 Winmag does on big animals. I'm of the theory, big gun = no tracking. Anchor them right where you shoot them if you do your part. No 1/2 mile track job in the dark at midnight from an animal that doesn't leak oil very much.

Jesse's bullet entered up back of the pig on a high going away shot, hit the spine, blowing it in half, did a left turn and blew a golf ball size hole out the far ribs. He lost some rib meat but piggy didn't wander off far. I think he said it flipped over and did the dying cockroach right there. <looking for "dying cockroach" smiley>.

After losing a deer that staggerd over to a cliff and took a header landing where we couldn't even climb down to I went to the anchor shot. Spine in the neck or blow both shoulders out when possible. I've seen deer run with one leg blown off but I've never seen one even hobble far with only 2 legs left. They can only kangaroo it then and they will try it.

I really couldn't believe the damage it did. IT's interesting, even with that big hole, there wasn't much visible blood on the ground until I lifted her hind feet into the air... Then it poured out of EVERYWHERE... two holes, nose, and mouth. She didn't suffer at all. That's the best part. Lost half the ribs and part of 1 tenderloin/backstrap - If I'd hit lower they'd be fine.

Also much more humane than a commercial slaughterhouse, mountain lion, disease, etc. She had NO CLUE.

Congrats Ozstriker!!!

I know what you mean about the addiction part. I shelled out for two guided hunts after the JHO Pig-O-Rama last year! Guided hunts are O.K., but nothing beats being able to wander free around Tejon with pointers on where to look from all the JHO Ham Slam veterans!
