Well, it is finally here, I have been waiting for this week for a long time. 3 of us are driving to Idaho Friday afternoon and plan to hunt Sunday (opening day for elk) to Friday and then head back to the Bay Area.

The area is not really known for it's trophy animals but there were lots of critters there last year and quite a few this year according to the reports from my buddies dad who is a local. I'd like a big muley just not sure I want to hike way up to where the big guys are suppose to be hanging out as my first priority is elk. I'd be happy with a decent 4x and spike or better bull. First legal bull gets whacked as meat is my main goal after that I'll look for a big deer up until the last couple of days then I'll think about meat not horns. If we drop elk early we are planning to hike up (way up) and bivy out for a couple of days for deer but who knows.

Funny enough work isn't going so well this week, can't seem to get my head in the game

Come on Friday!!!! Good luck to everyone else hunting this weekend and next, hopefully I'll have some success photos and a couple of full coolers soon.

Thanks guys. Somewhere in between North Fork and Salmon is about all I know of the area. New places are always fun to check out.

Good luck up there BDB. Can't wait to see pictures and read some stories. It's a long drive to Idaho. You're lucky to have someone drive with you. I had to drive all by myself. Not fun, but worth the drive.

I hear ya Soupr. I did the drive to CM and NM by myself in the last 3 years. All three were about the same drive, roughly 18 hours. I would drive 13 on day on, get a room and then get up early and drive the last 5 or so. It's not so bad on the way out but someing back is sure tough (especially without game).

The aspens look nice too. This picture was from the guys fishing at mid day one of the days last year:

Good luck~! You might be disappointed in the lack of aspen foliage but it should make it easier to spot elk this year. Looking forward to the reports.

Did they drop early this year? I know the weather forecast is a for a lot of moisture and temps in the low 20's in the AM by mid week and only warming into the high 40's low 50's. And that's at about 5200 feet in North Fork, we will be higher. Personally I'll take that over the sunny and 70 they had most of this week!!!!!! Time to head home from work and pack the truck up. I should sleep well tonight

Dude, we've had some weather this year...not uncommon prior to the '76 drought.

If you get lost like ArrowSlinger and end up in Utah somehow, stop on by...

Tear 'em up BDB. While you're at it, run a couple over to unit 36 while you're at it.

Good luck. There are a lot of elk in that area because when ever we go to my parents in Montana we have to drive right through there and we always see elk. It's usually in the winter when the elk are down in their wintering grounds but we usually see 400-500 elk from Salmon to Hamilton,Montana.

OK fellas, he should be gone by now... time to start making "SAVE BDB" t-shirts and crank up the camo lingerie jokes.

Ok BC, I'll put the first log on the fire. The pic BDB posted above was doctored for that post. I have the original and it clearly shows BDB as he was trying to figure which attire to start his hunt in!
