i dont know about you, but theres got to be more than that amount of pigs left, if they only used traps? and i would think if they dont catch them in a month or two there will be more!
Just a thought, write or email the folks running the dealio and ask them to consider hunters. Is there a fort commander or is the fort now controlled by NPS? Didn't they do a cleanup and turnover to another agency?
Who's got the contact info? Bust loose with the skinny.
BLM is running the show, along with the Army. They won't allow hunting since this area is very popular with mountain bikers, hikers, school groups. Also very close to military housing.
Trapping is low exposure, which is what they wanted. For awhile a select group of volunteers would assist in the project. I helped out for a bit a couple of years ago. Got out after 1 month of volunteering.
I helpled for about a year or so. There were a lot of hoops to jump through. Certain areas available for hunting depredation on very few occasions while others were trap only. This traping and hunting has been going on for years. It was a royal pain in the ass. Bait/set the traps at night and return before the sun and the moutain bikers showed up to check em. Winter time was the hardest. Plenty of food and water so the hogs wouldnt trap. Summer time the hogs were easier to trap next to the watering holes.
We volunteered our time and labor. Ive depredated many places over the years and have done this many times. The BLM botanist in charge never listened to any advice about how to spend our efforts and labor in a more efficent or timely way. We packed 300lb traps up and down canyons and brushy hills on a weekly basis. Half of the traps were never set because the hogs were simply "trap smart" or not even in the area where we were ordered to put the traps. We would bait traps every day but only set them if he felt like it. I got sick of the politics and extremely passive way they were going about it. Even though we cought or shot many hogs most if not all the volunteers quit after a short time due to the lack of respect given to the volunteers time and effort.
