In regard to an overwhelming response to my Post about the Ranch;
Here ya go gang!

The Ranch is in Parkfield/San Miguel, Calif.

She's one of the nicest old birds you'll ever meet and her husband Martin knows more about hogs than their Mommas do.

Rifle and Bow hunting alike are welcome. It's $225.00 per person with a 4 person minimum. If you hunt with 3, you're still paying for 4. The price includes lodging in a Bunk House with a working kitchen.

You bring your own food and drinks. ***Bit of advice*** Bring enough to share with Martin & Gloria and invite them to join your group for dinner. They will share a lot of info you won't get from books or even guides.

Typically, everyone who goes there chips in and lends a hand i.e.; If fire wood gets delivered, we usually help unload and stack it. Nothing too time consuming.

WORD of WARNING though...If you shoot a cow, it will be a $1200.00 steak dinner.

I'd be careful with certain hunts in the Parkfield area. Parkfield can be some of the best pig hunting in the state if you are on the right property, but it can also be the worst hunting you've ever seen if you're on the wrong one. Shoot me an email an we can talk further.

Yeah,
I've seen it both ways there but then, I've only been there once and not seen any Hogs. Weather,Water and technique are everything.

On my last trip (3 wks ago) 6 of us hunted but only one guy took a Hog. But as you know...That's why it's called Hunting and not Killing.

It was still a great trip and I'm usually happy if one of my buddies bags one. I still say private land is best. Last year, only 5.3% of all takes in Calif. were on public land. I guess that kinda speaks for itself.

I really didn't answer your question. I believe there's a total of 8 bunks and on the last trip there were 7 of us on the ranch. My son came with as an observer to listen and learn from the guys. It's a really nice place and the price isn't too shabby either.

San Miguel is just North of Paso Robles in San Luis Obispo County. About half way between SF and LA on Hwy 101.

From what i understand Parkfield is the best. One guy I work with owns a huge ranch up there (he keeps threating to take me up there) and he said people up there view the hogs like rats and run them over every chance they get. I was passing through the town one night and had to wait for the pigs to cross (probably about 1-2 hundred). Well gl to those of you who go.

OK, mnfshrman, arrowslngr, Mel...I'm in, and that makes FOUR...and I'm sure we could get a couple more or so to fill the rest of those bunks, so now all we gotta do is agree on a date that works for EVERYBODY! David and I are both in Temecula, so travel isn't a problem for us(especially with gas goin' the way it is).
What do you guys think? Can we put a Hunt together?

I'm up for a group hunt, anybody else? I have the 19th-28th off of this month. I really want to go on a pig hunt soon. I can also probalby pull a couple of buddys to go if we need more. I heard I can get a pig here locally for around $350 but I haven't looked into it yet. Anybody want to hook up let me know. I live in Santa Barbara so if your coming from down South maybe we can truck pool.

Lets kick some dates around. I have another hunt scheduled with Ken Whitaker on April 23rd. The 13th and the 27th of March is out for me, have a Mule deer banquet on the 12th and a wedding to attend on the 27th. All of April is out, May will probably be a better month for me to free up a weekend. F350, what's the terrain like on the ranch? is it real brushy, or mixed with brush and oaks. Just curious.

Unfortunately can't do much this month, but april & may are wide open....i'm up north in Sac, but heading down south isn't much of a problem & can leave early on a friday if needed.

I don't think this is Hamilton's ranch. If it is the one I think it is, it is closer to HWY 46 and further from the town of Parkfield - more toward the Parkfield cemetary, I think.

The terrain is pretty much mixed. Here's some help though for those of you going.

Early, Early morning: Along the South/West Fence line (Referred to as 4 corners)
Are some of the higher hills and heavy brush where they move around alot and bed down.

In the afternoon (almost dusk) they tend to move North along the West fence line and cross through a large open area commonly referred to as the Canyon Valley.
If you Start West of the road facing West, you'll sometimes see them crossing a Huge open shooting lane. I know of 5 Hogs being taken in there.

At the far East end of the Canyon valley, there's an old fence line (Okay to cross)
along a ravine that takes you to another Brush area. Ther was a S_it load of heavy rooting there on my last trip and it was still wet soil with fresh scat. Just missed 'em.

There are also 2 ponds on the property but you should'nt count on them being too full. We did see sign at the cattle troughs though.

There are Pheasant Hunts held creekside there but Martin's not the only one who hosts them.

Also, if you go to MYTOPO.COM, you can view aerial photos of the property.
If someone going lives near Simi Valley, I'd be glad to meet with you and help mark out the land to the best of my ability.

I left a topo map in the dining area of the clubhouse for other hunters to use.

Oh! sorry Bruz,
Cholame Rd. North of the 46. It's more like a really long driveway and watch for cattle,they're not afraid of trucks and won't move unless you come right up on 'em.

Their driveway is on the inside of a 90 degree Right turn just before you get to the bridge into Parkfield.

Eat at the Parkfield Cafe, You guys will Love the atmosphere and the Steaks...Oh my God they're good (Local Beef) cooked over Oak.

You guys will have to call Gloria and get a list of what weekends are available and when you choose one don't hesitate to mail her the check because the first check there gets that hunt. Last year a buddy didn't send the money in right away and we lost that week had to reschedule.I think they overbook to make sure there's always someone there each week, can't really blame them though. They are really nice people, the property is easy to hunt. and the bunkhouse is very rustic. Would like to hunt it again someday..... but The Ham Slam is first.

If it just so happens we end up picking a date that works good for both of us, maybe we can hook up and commute over there together? I'm only about 45min south of you, and you would be driving right by me. Once we get a date settled in, let think about it.
