Is there a place to stop and do any shooting? I am going to the HamSlam the end of the month and will be traveling from the bay area. I was just wondering if there was any BLM land on the way where I could stop and get in a little target practice

There's a range about 45 min drive past Tejon in Santa CLarita called A Place to Shoot. I'm sure there's some ranges in Bakersfield, I'm just not familiar with them.

You could try 5 dogs range north of bakersfield off of Famosa & Thule rd. Or on your way down give me a phone call & I'll try & meet you out there. What do you want to shoot? rifle, pistol or shotgun? I know of another place between Bakersfield & Taft up in the hills but you only got about 50 or 60 yrds till you hit the hillside.

There's a pretty nice range pretty close by to San Mateo..

Los Altos Rod and Gun Club...That's where I go.

If you want some open space in NF or BLM land, you may be taking a little side trip on the way to Los Padres NF or BLM land near Coalinga...

I don't know about you, though - once I'm on furlough and released from the house - I'm a laser beam to Tejon.

What does the fire inspection cover? The Jeep has no catalyctic converter but does have a regular exhaust system. Will I be allowed on with this modification? .....hronk

When I had my truck inspected last weekend, they basically just gave it the quick once over. They popped the hood and looked at the exhaust manifolds, then crawled under and looked things over. They did take an old rag and partially restricted the tailpipe to create backpressure. They were checking for exhaust leaks. I think they are more concerned with exaust leaks than what components you have. I had my truck inspected at the Mettler fire station. Phone # 661-858-2490. The other stations that do inspections are Arvin 661-854-5517, and Lebec which I cannot find in the phone book. If you are coming from Bishop, Arvin or Mettler are your best bets. If anyone needs directions, post and I will provide. Also If you anyone needs the number for the Lebec station, I can dig a little deeper. All three stations are Kern County Fire Dept. stations. If you are coming from the South, Lebec is on your way. It's right on I-5 just a couple miles south of Tejon Headquarters. The Mettler station is about 10 - 15 miles North of Tejon (right on I-99 at the Hwy 166 "Maricopa Highway" exit). The Arvin Station would work OK for those of you coming from the East on Hwy 58. It is kinda out of the way for others. -Tony

Thanks for the thorough answer. My partner called the Fire Dept. and they said the same about the rag test and wondered why we were so lucky up here to get away with taking off the c.c. They said that the converters are a worse problem than the exhaust systems for grass fires. So we'll see what happens....hronk

I wanted to ask a similar question, but I am in East Orange County. I need to sight in my .308 for the Ham Slam, could anyone give me the closest range? I need one that has the whole sha-bang. Sands bags, stands, whatever steadying devices I can get!

ScottOsan,

If you come down I-5, you can take the Shields exit and head up little Panoche road. It's a few miles in, but you'll hit the Panoche Hills BLM land (NOT THE PANOCHE RESERVOIR... no rifles allowed there).

The gate was open Saturday, so you can drive in a little ways... there's acres upon acres to shoot. If the gate is closed, you can still walk in far enough to warm up the rifle.

That's about the most accessible spot I know of first hand. I'm sure there are others.

Do we have to have our vehicle approved by fire inspector before entering Tejon? Or do they do it there?

You have to have your fire certificate BEFORE entering Tejon. The Lebec fire station is only a mile or two from the Tejon gate, and the inspection literally takes minutes (unless you have a problem). I think you can also get it done at any CDF station, and the certificate is good for a year.

Buck-Eye, I use Fish Canyon range. It's just above where the 605 Fwy. ends and the 210 Fwy. intersects. Stay in the middle lane going North on 605 and get off at Hunington. Make a right and then a left of Fish Canyon Rd. The range is at the top of the road just right of the cement plant. They will have everything you need but come early if your looking to get a bench at the 200yd. area. There is only about 10 or so of them available to the public. Those are the ones I use. You can also try Lyttle Creek but they wont have much to offer in targets, bench, sand bags, etc.

for those that want a place to pop off a few, the area only lets you get 50 or 60yrds but if you take the 119 heading west, turn left on the airport road before you get into TAFT. At the top of this rd is Honolulu rd turn left, watch on your right side for a big whit sign (forgot what it says but it's the only one there) turn left at that sign, follow the dirt/paved rd around & you will find a "dump" area with an old vw rabbit & alot of other targets to shoot at. This is oner of the local shooting area around.

The actual range directions are 99 to Famosa rd go east, stay on Famosa till it dead ends at Thule (its way out there you didn't pass it) turn left on Thule go about a mile to a mile & a half & there is a sign that says "5 dogs range" turn right there follow it up to the building. this range goes out to 500 meters for steel & has paper set up at 100 for rifles. They also have pistol out to 150 yrds. here is the link to the range website. hope this helps some. http://www.5dogsrange.com/
