Took five Boy Scouts to the ranch today after a few months of training on big game hunting. They're part of a Crew that had been focusing on other shooting sports and wanted to try real hunting. I got up early and set up a few hit silhouettes around the ranch, intending to have them do a bunch of simulated stalks on them throughout the day. They arrived around 10:30 and we started walking the ridge, teaching them to glass and other basics of hunting. Around noon we got to the back of the property where the ridge road drops down to a creek, a nice cool area with lots of water and a place I'd seen a herd of pigs earlier in the week. Sure enough, at the bottom of the hill I spotted a black and white hog… and then a big brown one… and then a few more! I grabbed Stanton, the nearest Scout to me, and had him load up quickly. We then moved down the hill while the rest of the group stayed behind. After about 5 minutes we got in position to see the herd slowly moving up the far hill, with a group of them splashing in a wallow. I sat Stanton down and gave him my shooting sticks and told him "calm down, relax, and get on the black one on the right". I could tell he was nervous but he got ready and I told him he could shoot when he wanted to. After a bad first try (safety still on!) he let fly with his -06 from 135 yards and the sow dropped where she stood - a perfect shot that when in her right elbow, took out her heart, and blew thru the other side. Hooray!!

We sat there for a few minutes and I called for the group to join us. Stanton was ecstatic and kind of babbling… I had to tell him to relax and enjoy it! We went up to the sow and after the group caught up I did a field dressing demo on the spot. Stanton insisted in doing much of it, though he was happy to let me deal with the hind end! I went and got the quad to take the hog back to where we parked, and Stanton then skinned it while the rest of the scouts continued the originally planned drill.

I had to leave right away but s a couple are going to stay up for the evening hunt, maybe another kid will get his first hog today too!

A great day in the field and even more fun helping Stanton bag his first than getting one myself. 02050221.JPG

Good job. I can relate to your statement, "even more fun helping Stanton bag his first than getting one myself." Watching kids accomplish almost anything new is as exciting as doing it yourself.
BTW Can a jolly old at man join you troop?

Good story, I always like to see young hunters get started hunting. It is fun to give them advise and pass the hunting heritage along.

Great Job! Boy Scouting is the best. I had great leaders like yourself growing up in Church. So thankful.
