Even if he doesn't arrow a bull, Brent will have had as much fun as anyone ever could or should, by law..

I would pay money to just be in camp on this trip.

I don't like to breath smoke...and Dept policy. It is actually a Drager, but we just changed to Scotts a few months ago.

Any word yet on the hunt?

Sonamubeech!!!

I can't wait to catch up on all the new stories. While in AZ, I heard that PaulC put up a story that made a few guys tear up. Congrats to all the great hunters. I'll get caught up soon.

Thanks for all the support y'all. I had a blast. I didn't kill a bull. I didn't even pull the trigger, though I was at full draw four or five times. As for the partying, I didn't even drink 18 beers the whole trip. I was up at 4am sixteen days in a row. I was usually sacked out by 8:30p.

Thanks to Jeff and Ed for swinging by and joining me in the hunt. Logan "JLOstrander" came by for dinner and a few beers one night as well. The company was very well appreciated. I had at least two stalks a day. Sometimes four. The bulls were not rutting. Little 5 points were running five or six cows. But, there was no humping or fighting going on. No broken tines. They were just practicing. The big boys were still buried in the hills. They were bedded up high in the pine-filled cuts by the time it was light, Or, at least they were up high already. I would glass cows and sometimes a bull up high, about a 1000 ft elevation change. I would take off and try to sneak in. It was like hunting for coues deer with the bow. The good bulls would not answer a call. They would bugle a bit. But they were very call shy. So, I would stop calling and try to stalk in - on that crushed red lava rock. Didn't work. They would pop their heads up at about 100 yds and peg me everytime. I did call in some dinks. I was at full draw on a 320 bull on day 5 or so. I callled in two 5 pts and drew as they were coming in. I had some spikes, and other raghons come to the call. I just could not seem to let an arrow go, knowing that any day the rut could turn on and big bulls would move in. I did make a three hour stalk on a bedded 350-type bull. But, he had six beeches and they pegged me. Also, saw a few 340 bulls and just couldn't close the gap. If I called, they would disappear.

I did see four bulls on the ground. My Country Singer buddy took a 295 gross bull on the 2nd to the last day. His buddy killed a 323 with 26" 3rd's on Day 2. I saw another 317 in the back of a truck and helped find a 300 bull for a guy in the flats. Clint, the Country Singer, gave me a hindquarter and half the backstraps. So, I have to hunt down the freezer paper and get busy.

I went through some serious highs and lows. I was elated, depressed, stressed, frustrated and everything in between. In the end, I am content. I gave it 100%. I learned a ton about elk hunting. I let a nice 320 bull walk. I lost 10 pounds and I feel good. It was a long time to be away from the family. Probably too long. I'd probably break that trip up into two parts next time.

Thanks again for all that positive juju you guys were sending my way. I'm blessed to have good friends. Thanks.

Ddi you at least bring home that skull?

I'd have that in my front yard - it'd scare away the jehova's witnesses.

Yeah, a couple weeks is a bit of a stretch to go without seeing the family when you're used to every day. Nonetheless, sounds like it was well worth your time out there!

Thanks for the story One Track. When you can't be on your own hunt, it's great to hear about the experiences of dedicated hunters.

You hunted hard and learned a ton, hell you only had five years in that tag, get it again and whack a monster. Until then we can hunt some OTC critters and eat well.

I am glad you stuck with your standards, way too high for this Georgia boy, but you set a standard and stuck with it, sometimes you eat tag soup, but other times you will be standing over your goal when other guys will be watching their goal walk while they have a dink in the truck, you stuck to what you wanted, for that I tip my hat hoss, you da man and no one can say otherwise.

Now go kill something in SD.

Way to go Brent.....glad you had a good time there. It's like no other elk hunt isn't it? Sure wish that 350 would have walked by for you to stick.

Brent, you have nothing to hang your head about!! You gave it your all, 10x more than most!! You have a wealth of knowledge and not just for elk hunting. You did what it takes to tag, you did your homework and you shot a bunch. You passed on bulls that would have been trophies anywhere else in this country!! My hat is off to ya amigo!!

You got stones (and a very understanding wife) buddy for toughing it out that long. Nice work. I know that info learned was worth the price of admission. Now go whack a local deer.
