Well we've all heard about how pigs root around looking for mushrooms and such. Well Now I know what they are looking for!. I had the opportunity to harvets some chanterells from a friends property in SB. Once I was told what they look like I was searching like a mad man. I went forging for two hours looking under oaks trees for this tastey treat. I ended up collecting a bunch in a matter of minutes. Check out the pics. Anyone else go for these? Anyone want to hook up an go find some? Any mushroom experts here? Not the turd kind either!

My wife loves mushrooms. I have never heard of them, nor eaten them. I will ask her, but I doubt she has tried them. Let me know what you think of them, how you prepared them, etc. I bet I could find quite a few of them, they look familiar. Please let me know, if they are good I will want to know more...

Yum, Yum...
Do price check next time you are shopping, these are not your basic white shrooms. My brother used to have a bad problem with mushroom poachers tresspassing on his place, right after a good rain. The pigs love em.

Never tried it. I'm always too afraid my dumb self would pick the wrong ones and end up naked on top of a water tower... or dead in the morgue.

Those do look familiar, though. Congrats on harvesting just a little more of nature's bounty!

I got these North of SB.They are eveywhere if you know where to look. The problem is that they love Poison Oak,you will get covered, and there is a False Chanterelle which guess what? look like a chanterelle but can getcha! I spent hours researching before I ate the first ones. Then I ate a few and waited untill morning. After that it was mushroom omlettes each day. Just found a few more tonight in Malibu driveing along a major road! Please pick them one inch above the base so that they can continue to grow.
If you have some access to property with Coast Live oak and want a lesson in finding these things, email me.

Went out this morning and found another 8 pounds of golden delicious mushrooms but I did see the deadly Jack o Lantern and False Chanterelle not ten feet from the goods. I brought my Petersens field guide with me just to make sure. Oh yeah they were in the short sticks of leafless oak.

As it was mentioned in a previous post "Do a price check". My neighbor use to pick these and sell them for 300-400 a box. He gave some to me and they were pretty good.

To anyone who is thinking about harvesting these little babys, had better be darn sure of what you're picking. And like has been stated they love to grow in the oakleaf mulch that supports the dreaded poison oak...

Yup. The poisonous mushrooms have a nice resemblance to the edible ones. The poisonous mushrooms destroy the liver even with only ONE meal. There is no cure. If fatal dose is consumed, the only life saving measure is a liver TRANSPLANT and that has to be done in days, not weeks. Be aware, be safe, if in doubt, keep it OUT!!!!! 'Nuff said and God Bless you.

Yeah I pick them, but I don't eat them. They were going for $14 a pound in the beginning of the season, but now that the market is flooded it's down to like 8.

I have never noticed pigs eating them also. I think a common misconception is that they do but I have found that the pigs just root in the oak leaves where they grow which leads people to believe that they eat them.

I got pictures and I'll post them later my computer is being gay right now.

Here's what you do to cook them. Saute a few shallots and chopped onion in a pan with olive oil or butter untill they cook down a little. Then add the mushrooms. Cook them down untill they are soft and let the liquid cook down untill its almost gone. The add some cream (the fat free half and half these days is good) and some more butter and salt to taste. Add cracked pepper (lots) and some fresh tyme. Cook the cream down a bit untill it thickens up and dump the whole deal on a venison steak.
For pasta follow the same deal but instead of adding cream, add marscapone cheese. Adjust the flavor with salt and pepper and dump on pasta. Did home-made gnocchi with this and it blew minds!

If you really want to get jiggy, add some truffle oil to the mix when cooking it down.

I positively love those things. If I knew wher to find the m around here I would be out in a minute. They are excellent to venison in a cream sauce. As far as false chanterelles, if you have seen a real one up close and know what to look for it is easy to see that it is the real thing.
