Opening day report from Lake Sonoma

Well, you should have seen me when Pete showed me the spot the hogs almost ran him over. His head resting on one side of the tree with his back to where the pigs came from and the trail they walked down was on the other side of the tree, less than 5 feet. I was huffing and puffing from climbing the hill and also buckled over laughing so hard it hurt. All i could picture was him coming too with all this little pigs flipping him off and heading for cover. Damn that was funny. Sorry Pete

It was a great time getting together and going hunting with some new JHO members. A BIG THANKS to John (NorCalHunter) for picking us up in 3 different groups at the dock and driving us all over the lake for 3 days in his boat.

BDB's buddy, Brad, took the award for drinking the most Kickin' Chicken on Sunday night.

Thanks BDB for the Elk and Venison grub as well. We ate like kings in Thumb Camp. The whole group were a lot of fun to hang out with and trade stories around the camp fires.

Looking forward to sharing a hunting camp again with everyone......next time we'll just have to have some hogs hanging.

YoungBlood brings up a point I forgot to comment on in my post. NorCalHunter is a class act, thanks John for providing the transport and all the effort. Much appreciated. I’m sure it took you a bit of elbow grease to get your boat clean, sorry we were not around to help with that.

We did eat like kings! Eating being something near and dear to my heart, thanks to all for sharing.

We were the guys that rolled in Monday night to Skunk Camp...the Thumb campers weren't kidding; that boat was LOADED DOWN!

Had I known you were all JHO'ers we would have stopped by...sounds like we missed out on a great party.
Talked with one guy pulling out of the boat launch an Wednesday afternoon who killed a pig and one of my buddies found a gut pile on Tuesday. I was the only one out of our group to even lay an eye on an porker. On Wednesday am I had a half dozen piglets and a sow moving through the tall grass at 38 yards - just no shot opportunity that I felt great about. Lots of deer and turkeys...just not a lotta pigs. All of the extra pressure combined with that full moon definately did not do us any favors.

hey guys, it was my pleasure to hunt with all of you and look forward to getting together again soon!! I had a great time and learned a whole lot about pig hunting. Thanks for sharing your "backpacking food" I don't think I have ever had better camp cooking. Can't wait to get back up there!!!

We all covered a lot of ground, and had a lot of folks in camp. Logger's camp had two shots taken and one pig killed...

Greetings, thought I'd report in.

I haven't been on this site in two years or hunted since Sonoma two years back.

I Just returned from a one nighter with a buddy of mine from Sonoma.

I saw two different boars and got a 15 yard shot with my recuve on one; he jumped the string you might say.
I had followed a fairly "hot" trail for a couple of hours, several rubs, fresh scat, etc. I Walked out on a knob with a small medow and nice canopy. About a 150 lb boar sits up from where he was all burrowed in. Had a shot on one lung not two, heart was a bit obstucted by grass/bedding material. I passed on the shot as I have never wounded an animal and hoped for a better shot. He stands, flips arond 180 degreee, pauses for 3 tenths of a second (broadside) while I release my arrow (shooting instictive w/ recurve) and his muscles were appearenly charge with jet fule because that fella just flew outta there right upon my release...

I rather enjoyed watching him tear up into the hill side. My BBQ pit will sit empty...

As I tell my wife, it's about a nice walk in the woods, seeing an animla is a bonus. Getting a "clean, ethical" shot off is a blessing.

I had a wonderful time!! Thanks to the people who make it all happen. I probally won't get out again till maybe March as my wife is expecting... but I sure know one area I'll be headed for when I'm able...

Our pig hunting group hunted a new ranch for us south of Salinas one time and the owner DID bring in two dancin' girls. Strippers, actually, it was a wild hunt.
